    Radar Detector

So, I live in new york and am still a somewhat new driver. Only driving around 2 years and owning a car for 8 months. I tend to go about 10MPH over the speed limit. Not a big deal and most cops on long island and in Albany dont care about that.

Still on the side streets is what scares me. So does anyone have a idea of a good radar detector and how much it might run me?

Note: I very well understand radar detectors are illegal in New York state.

edit: I looked around on google and newegg, but really not many have great ratings(or they have like 4 with max eggs >.> not all that helpful)

I either got the 9500i or the 9500ix. Don't feel like going to the car to look. Although it's pricey, it's an awesome detector. If you want to go stealth since it's illegal where you at and have the cash to spend go for the 9500ci. I'd having one of these you'll never pay for a shitty ass Cobra, etc. again. I had a Cobra years ago, and the Escorts really do give you a lot less false positives. Noticed it right away during my daily work commute.

Im take a look into that, its a little higher then I was planing to spend. However if it is as good as it looks and as everyone says I will spend the extra few dollars.

Eh don't go overboard. Most cops keep their radars on pulse now, when they see you they hit a button and it's too late. Typically if you see the cop, he already got you.

edit: also if you get pulled over and the officer was planning on only giving a warning, and sees the detector, you are almost guaranteed a ticket. Having one implies the intent to speed.

dont most of them see miles ahead? Ya I wont see him right away if he just turned it on, but I am in a high traffic zone, odds that it wont go off before hand would seem small, no?

You'd be surprised at the range of some police departments detectors. And I don't mean if he just turned it on, they have a setting that sends pulses every X seconds so that it's not constantly scanning. If it's constantly scanning then your radar detector will pick him up, if it's pulsing, which most cops do, he's going to get you.

The amount of traffic and other cars around you don't make much of a difference either. That is ofcourse you are lumped up enough and tailgating so that your vehicle appears larger than it actually is.

Radar detectors sound great, but they aren't that great to be honest. For the cost of some of them, not worth it, and being that they are illegal in your state, it's even worse.

Isn't the V1 stealth as well?

Detectors aren't illegal in any state I've lived in so I don't proclaim to know for sure. Around here, "most" cops most certainly do not use instant-on so you know about them for miles if you have a decent detector. Even for the ones that do, just stay in traffic and don't speed bad if you're alone unless you have lots of line-of-sight.

Bumparoo, I live in state where these are legal

Anybody have a recommendation for one with updated technology? A lot of the ones I see with good reviews on amazon and New egg are several years old

    Hoping for under $300

My understanding is that V1 is still the benchmark, and I'd hold out for buying one of those.

Is it worth looking into laser jammers too? From my understanding the laser gun has to be pointed at the detector to get an alert so they don't do anything when it's shot elsewhere

Well mehh these things are 400 bucks too

Tests/reviews of the radar jammer/detector combo were basically its effective, you have to set it to jam only once, and it buys you time to cut down from ludicrous speeds in a fast car. The review I was reading was Valentine v1 + jammer as like a 1k setup in a M5. Then they got a trick rear view mirror that had the V1 led arrow directionals built in.
