Friend of mine made a pretty valid point, how CvS2 was with the grooves, i'm sure the gem system will play the same way. Seeing it that way kinda makes sense, if they're saying it's balanced out, then we just gotta see what's going on as the development progresses.

I don't really buy the CvS2 groove analogy. We're comparing six grooves to xxx amount of combinations with supposedly over a hundred gems, some Ono even stating stack on one another. Crap like Auto-Block, a meter will be spent to activate a missed block, already kind of dissuades me from the game because who gives a fuck about giving up one meter to prevent X00~ points of damage. Just one example of their idea of "balancing" the gems.

I give it two months post launch before the game boils down to 2~3 OP-tier characters with the right gem combinations. Obviously there's still plenty of time in development so I hope I'm proven wrong but Ono has fooled many of us time and time again. Just seems like they're trying to toss to much shit into the game right now, might as well call the project name before release SFxT Bros.

we'll definitely see in the end, i really am hoping that at tournament level certain gems will get banned etc. some of the things the gems have are pretty ridiculous.

Why am I watching block strings .-.?

In the first video, did he just stop blocking or was his block broke?

It wasn't a block string in the first vid, just 3 kicks while he wasn't blocking. Once he ran out of gauge, the kicks landed and a combo started, but the first 3 hits weren't a combo.

In other news, It looks like Q is gonna be in this game. This pleases me!

Oooh, so if you have an autoblock gem, and you don't block, every time the gem activates, you lose a meter?

Just looking at the new teasers. One of em looks like a brown jacket with gloves on. Figured its probably Q; I can't think of anyone else that would fit the bill. I know Paul Phoenix is one of them, though, as we already have Ken and there's nobody else with a red Gi with bare feet.

Seth Killian clarifies Street Fighter x Tekken's controversial Gem System
It may sound like a dull hum from all the way over there in Outworld, but the Street Fighter community has been a noisy, combative warzone lately, and not in a good way. See, ever since Capcom outlined Street Fighter X Tekken's Gem System, Street Fighter devotees (and competitive fighters in general) have been conducting heated debates over the system's merits, drawbacks and implications for serious tournament play, as well as the impact it will have on the casual fighting community.

Seth Killian, Capcom Community Manager and face of all things Street Fighter in North America, chatted with Gamasutra to expound upon some of the Gem System's intricacies and the design philosophy behind it. First and foremost, Killian stressed that the system has been part of SFxT's design philosophy for years, and that it represents the proverbial "nerd feather" that intrigues analytical theorycraft-style gamers.

He also addressed concerns that the Gem System would provide an unprecedented boost in artificial skill to unskilled players, saying that there's no combination of gems that would allow an unskilled fighter to triumph over someone who knows what they're doing, as each gem has its own specific activation requirement. Since gems aren't always "on," players will have to rely on their own abilities to meet those requirements and enable the ability, supposedly removing the potential for scrubs to earn top honors.

Most players, however, are not concerned with the Gem System's balance implications so much as they are the idea of gem exclusivity; Capcom has already announced that certain gems (and their related abilities) will only be available in specific pre-order or collector's edition packages. Gems may even be monetized as DLC, though Killian was unable to address those concerns beyond stating that Capcom is still "sort of figuring that stuff out," and reassured that no player would be able to buy their way into an advantage.

Balancing a fighting game is, well, a difficult act to begin with, and by adding thousands of potential variations to dozens of characters' abilities, we're worried that Capcom's attempt at creating an expressive customizable fighting environment will inadvertently result in an extremely rigid and defined tiered experience like Marvel vs. Capcom 2. As is the way with fighters, it will take months of post-release analysis and technology research by dedicated fighters before any of this will be settled; all we can do in the meantime is wait, and debate.

He also said today they were thinking about ditching pandora mode completely, which would be a great idea.

This game went from HYPE to retarded in about 2 weeks.

To be honest, looking at this as a tournament organizer, any plans I had to incorporate SFxT into a main game rotation got scrapped as soon as the Gem system came up. The amount of effort (or money) that may be required to pull it off is going to do poorly on a grassroots level. That's not to mention the possible amount of time consumed up front with fucktards trying to counterpick to the gem level.

I agree that this game has gone from hype to wtf in the matter of weeks.

They need to tone it down a bit and stop trying to add every little stupid shit some random dev thinks up that day.

Way too much shit going on...

They're forgetting about Tekken x Street Fighter. Just add random shit in that one. SFXT is more like SF, while TXSF will be like Tekken.

SF x T and T x SF have nothing to do with each other, other than basic premise. T x SF is being developed by Namco and will have no input at all from Capcom. Just like how Namco has no say in anything regarding SF x T. I personally don't mind gems as I'm not a tournament player, but I can see why it would cause fear regarding the game. This game is really pandering to the non-FGC crowd though, since I've seen plenty of complaints of "releasing the same game 3 times in 3 years." Even if the game is designed around gems and pandora mode, I don't see why you can't have no gem tournaments (no items, final destination, fox only). Even if it gets banned in tournaments, the gem system sounds fun to play around with regardless.

I doubt anyone at capcom actually thinks this is a good idea for (semi) serious play, just seems like they're trying to funnel players into buying content-less DLC.

The worst part is, regardless of what the community ends up thinking of the game, it's going to be forced into the center stage by capcom via EVO.
