huh? Evo is run by the fans. If no one likes the game, no one is going to enter the SFxT tournament which would prevent it from being a big part of Evo.

I seriously wish people would shut up and read re: "ban the gem system" comments. At this time, you cannot ban it. Capcom decided that it was an integral balance factor and thus it cannot be turned off. If it could be turned off, it would be at the drop of a hat. Instead, the game itself is going to find itself banned or relegated to side tournaments.
Seriously, balancing around this with Capcom's plan for exclusivity and DLC was by far the dumbest thing they could have done. It's going to cause a headache, and in the event that somehow someone is crazy enough it make it a main game at a major, it's going to be regulated to all hell.
No one has time to figure out which gems are balanced and which aren't, and even then, there's going to be huge month/year long debates about which gems should be allowed and which shouldn't. I agree, the game is going to be considered a joke if the gem system can't be circumvented or turned off.
Capcom is the biggest sponsor of evo by a long shot, it's going to be there, and it's going to be on the main stream regardless of what any players think. Why do you think HDR/TvC were picked as streamed events ahead of other games in recent years despite no one giving a shit? Or how about mortal kombat being announced as a main event for last years evo, long before anyone even had hands on experience with it? Evo is about as commercial as you can get.
Pro players are going to go where the money is anyway, so all the streamtards are still going to see wong/daigo/etc. playing it and think it's the new big thing.
I'm going to laugh if the money does go to SFxT, since it is Capcom's Smash Bros. That's right, I went there.
If Wiz and co. want to have a logistical nightmare on their hands, it's no skin off my back. But I've been talking to people who organize majors and they've already come out against it. Pretty sure Markman, Jebailey and myself joked about gems more than once when we were stuck at MLG.
Here is the problem and why the game will never be the main hit at EVO with gems:
1. Gems bought via DLC
2. Unique pre-order bonus gems
Why are these a problem? At EVO, you have 50+ Playstations setup for the tourney to run on time, and this means organizers would have to download/pay for ALL the gems on EVERY system, and then players are going to have to select from "HUNDREDS" of gems for BOTH characters?
Capcom is absolutely dropping the ball on this.
Never crossed my mind this would be tournament worthy. Same w/ MvC3, look the pos it turned out to be. Then again games aren't given the chance to mature like a fine wine, figure shit out yada yada yada.
Evo is about... well what else, the money. Throw piles of cash to a shitty game and the monkeys will dance.
1. EVO is about the hype; always was and always will be. People traveled from all over even when Marvel 2 was the biggest game only raking in around 250 or fewer competitors. The money, other than 1st place, was too little to ever matter. Money is about 3rd down the list, with competition coming in 2nd place for reasons people go to EVO.
2. You never once thought a game with Street Fighter, AND Tekken, in the name being produced by CAPCOM would be tournament worthy? The game looked like the greatest thing since sliced bread for about 95% of its existence since first revealed. The game's hype was easily on pace to be to top game at Evo 2012.
If you want to pick out game who have 0 chance in the tournament scene, see King of Fighters 13 and Soul Calibur 5. Skullgirls has a better chance than those games.
Entries are still what decides things though. If no one signs up, then the tournament would be over in 8 hours and barely have any stream time. The game is going to be on the EVO playlist regardless if Capcom wants it to, only because it's new. But if people decide that they don't want to play it, Capcom can't do anything.
Well, just playing devils advocate, MVC3 did have 2 DLC only characters and they were playable at EVO. But I can imagine selecting gems in tournament play is going to take a while...lol like you have to button check before every match, the time it takes to set the gems up is going to bring the hype down.
Game looked so amazing when it was first dropped. Pandora took away some of the hype, then it returned when people found out that it's a last resort mechanic instead of an instant comeback mechanic.
I truly feel they are dropping the ball with the Gem system, but I'll still give the game a chance because no one even knows how the Gem selection will work. It might be easy and streamlined more than people think. Anyways, once the game gets into everyone's hands, people will find out what combos work well, and/or some Gems will be outright banned.
Definitely de-hype when Ono said it's an integral piece of gameplay, but no one can even say for sure how balanced it will be at the moment. At any rate, I'm pretty sure the Gems will not be the end all be all mechanic in this game versus dedicated, pro players. If all else fails and no one really takes the game seriously, Capcom will remove the Gem system from the main game mechanics in a heart beat. Don't sit there and believe they won't at any point in time.
To be honest, they could have simply made it Street Fighter x Tekken ala SSF4 style and made a mountain of money regardless... they should stop trying to make it like a party "fighting" game. That's what the Magic Series is for.
About Gems making SxT completely tournament unviable: http://www.eventhubs.com/news/2011/o...kken/#comments
So... you don't even have to select any gems. It's an option to not have any equipped. Hopefully that calms some of the outrage a bit.
Also for the Pandora doubting: http://www.eventhubs.com/news/2011/o...-cut/#comments
Could be just cut out all together.
See? I thought as much. Capcom isn't retarded these days. They want to make bank.
I feel bad for Seth. The past few interviews with him come off as being mad apologetic about these dumbass additional systems in the game and him having to perform damage control.
I feel sorry for him too, but lets face it, he has one of the most awesome jobs in the world [apart from being busy all of the time]. Can't help for the developers being retarded on the ideas every once in a while... it's OK to be creative sometimes. Simple is always best to an extent however.
Nah, you know how fighters go. If Gems are outright banned in tournament play, people will naturally pick their main chickens around mobility and poke range.
Yeah, but what he's saying is that character's strength's and weaknesses might be way more acute because the game expects you to make up for them through the Gem system. Pixie characters might hit for absolute shit because the game expects you to use Damage+ Gems to make up for it, or slow characters might be shit slow because the game expects you to make up for it, etc etc.
I think he meant This Allah
late but This, alex's face is even in the backround for one of the stages ffs.
And something tells me they are gonna screw up button checks AGAIN.
