Capcom: Street Fighter X Tekken DLC on-disc to ensure compatibility

Over the weekend, it was discovered that forthcoming downloadable content for Street Fighter X Tekken already exists on the game disc itself, meaning that purchasing said content actually boils down to simply unlocking it. Some fans were riled by the revelation, enough so that Capcom has issued a statement on the matter.

According to the publisher, the DLC was placed on the disc in order to "save hard drive space and to ensure for a smooth transition when the DLC is available." Capcom community manager Brett Elston elaborated that including the DLC on the disc will allow all users to play against one another, regardless of whether or not they have purchased the DLC. Having a single, unified version of the game, said Elston, allows "everyone to participate in the update without additional patches or hiccups."

Another reason for the on-disc content, said Elston, is Capcom's promise to avoid a "super" version of SFxT akin to Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Capcom's full statement can be found after the break.

Capcom has confirmed that 12 new fan-favorite characters will be available as Downloadable Content (DLC) on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC versions of Street Fighter X Tekken later this year. The playable characters will make their debut on the PS Vita system when the game is released this fall, with the console and PC versions receiving them as DLC soon after. The character information and files were intentionally included on retail versions of the PS3 and Xbox 360 game to save hard drive space and to ensure for a smooth transition when the DLC is available, allowing players who choose not to purchase the content the ability to play against players that do. More specifics regarding pricing, dates and other additional exciting DLC plans for Street Fighter X Tekken will be shared at a later date. As a reminder, the retail version of the game will be the only disc-based version consumers will need to own and all future upgrades will come from post-launch DLC. The new characters fighting their way onto Street Fighter X Tekken are... from the Street Fighter side... Blanka, Cody, Dudley, Elena, Guy and Sakura will be playable and from Tekken... Alisa Bosconovitch, Bryan Fury, Christie Monteiro, Jack, Lars Alexandersson and Lei Wulong will all be available."

Christ. As much as Netherrealm studios managed to somehow fuck up every time they released a character, they showed this kind of bullshit ain't rocket science. Supply new characters as actual DLC, and offer compatibility packs bundled with freebies like costumes and shit



of course this is capcom, the company who tried to charge people for palette swaps for a 10 year old game, that would never happen. Nickel and diming has been part of their business model since 1993.

my killer was rufus. the prizes at my GS were pretty awesome, first had the choice of the game (any console) or a PS3 TE stick, 2nd was the SFxT game (reserve got refunded, any console), and 3rd was a $30 gift card and you could put it towards your purchase of SFxT. So our prizes were pretty sweet tbh. My gf wanted to buy me the game for my bday, so i picked the stick.
