First off...what version of third strike? there were 5(?) all with very different levels of Balance(A,B,C, DC, PS2).

Second, online? who cares, this game honestly sucks online unless you simply don't have the option of playing anyone in person.

Even on GGPO the online game is practically an entirely different game than the offline version more-so than SF4 is.

More third-strike is good, but it depends on how it plays out, the 3rd strike community is already segmented between Arcade Version A players and PS2 players, I doubt this will bring them all together so it might just fragment the community more if it's new balance changes.

this is great and all since it'll be on consoles, but you guys know you can already play 3s online with fba, right?

Had the pleasure of playing against KO and KSK for a month before Evo 2k3, absolute leagues beyond anything I could manage in 3S. Really awesome people as well (although he schooled me XvSF, a game he hand't played since he was in Junior High lol).

Excuse me for not having been that serious into fight'em games a couple years ago when I did play SF3, but what's the particular reason for it to suck online? Is it the need to have absolutely zero latency issues for the parry system to effectively be usable, or is there more to it than that?

You don't really need zero latency for parries but certain things like red parries will be pretty difficult since you have a 3 frame window and you have to go from block to neutral to parry to successfully do it but it isn't like people are doing red parries all the damn time anyway.
It's just the typical input lag that makes most fighters inferior online, I didn't think it was better or worse than any other fighting game back when I played 3S on GGPO on my PC for a short while.

Perhaps I've just been spoiled by Blazblue's networking system then, along with its generally large (in comparison) amount of frames to buffer input with, vs something like this that requires instant reflexes on a regular basis.

Blazblue suffers just as much as any other fighting game due to input lag, there's just no real way around it.
Latency will always have an impact, your casual players won't really care much, as I'm sure is the case for you and will be the same for 3S.

I don't think it'll really do much to most people.

Most people are also terrible at games, which is why they don't notice.

The biggest reason the frame buffer sucks is because in practice it's variable, which means you can do the same combo twice, exactly the same way, and get two different results.

To be successful at playing online, you have to dial-back a lot, do simpler combos with less hits because that reversal is always waiting the moment your connection and not your player-skill decides it wants to drop some inputs.

It also severely hinders mind-games because well you're baiting a punish with a pause they'll actually land the damn thing before *you* can react to a game you started.

Which as someone once told me "Mind games? Fuck mind games...LAG mind games".

Online play is a different game than offline for most fighters, but since 3S requires much more reaction than most mainstream fighters, those flaws are particulary evident at mid-to-high level play.

FBA is FinalBurnAlpha, an arcade emulator (upto CPSIII emulated).

GGPO is the netcode written by Ponder, used in FinalFightSomething on XBL and PSN.

It'll never be perfect, it's just hopeful that GGPO will be used since it's what people who have been playing it online are used to, and is arguably a better option then what SF4 has.

I missed this, good shit. I'll be looking forward to it. never played SFIII since I didn't get into fighting games until recently, and don't own a stick for the PS2 (and I am never going back to a pad).

Filtered original sprites, hd backgrounds? Hmph.

Edit: Actually, those backgrounds look completely unretouched from 3S...way to laze it up capcom. Guess I'll stick with the dreamcast version.

    for comparison
