    ATI Radeon 5850

Causing weird screen issues in Aion. Example:

    Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Pre-rendered things or objects/terrain off in the distance show up fine. It's only things up close near me or terrain I'm running on that cause this effect.

That looks like a classic case of artifacting to me. Are you overclocking your card any? If so, feed it some more voltage.

Not overclocking it at all. Brand new computer from cyberpower, i-7 930, 750w corsair powersupply. Haven't fiddled with any settings in the BIOS though.

If it is artifacting it wouldn't be a BIOS setting anyway, you could tweak it with MSI afterburner, a similar program, or flash your bios. Seeing it also reminds me of something that I saw back in the day in Counter Strike when it used Direct 3D rendering. Have you tried changing drivers or reinstalling the game?

If you haven't messed with drivers the first thing I would do is try the latest 10.6 catalyst drivers, if you are currently on 10.6 I would try to roll back to 10.5 and then 10.3 since those ones generally are pretty stable. Also, look into upgrading your Direct X.

Are there supposed to be any objects where the black boxes are? For example rain or snow? Or is it just breaking in random spots. If is is the latter then it raises your chances of it being artifacting, if it is the former there is a very high possibility you can fix it with the right drivers/direct x.

How are your GPU temps under load?

yeah that definitely looks like artifacting. If its stock settings and not overclocking I'd get like Real Temp and monitoring the temperature while playing Aion. It could just be that it's not properly ventilated, in the case, and its causing the gpu temperatures to get to high. Could also be due to a faulty card (it's more common then you may think) if its brand new (again, check gpu temperatures and find out what is common temp's for the GPU - some can go a lot higher and be in the "normal" zone then others). May also want to check the fan spot on the card to make sure it's not covered in too much dust (but if its a new card this shouldn't be the issue anyways).

Take the cover off and tell us what the manufacturer of the card is, also the model number if you can. Sad to say though a lot of non-reference ATI 5850 and 5870 cards have been giving people a number of problems with artifacting, BSOD and just down right shitty performance. Plus for some reason the drivers on ATI side have been lacking recently(more so on HD 5870).

Really though reviews on the 5850-5870 series have been a bit mixed. Didn't stop me from buying a reference XFX 5870 though. Especially when XFX gives you a double lifetime warranty.

Sorry, stepped out for a few. Let me answer as many of the questions as I can. It's just breaking in random spots, there's no weather effects where those squares are showing up.

    Screenshot of GPU temp:

Have to run out right now so I can't check the make/model of the card, but I'll post back here at some point.

After letting the client settle down when I close it, everything goes back to normal again. Same thing happened to me on L4D2 a couple times. What's the reason for it going back to normal after getting messed up like in my first post? Point to a temperature problem?

It should also give GPU temperature, dunno what that "106A5" stands for. That should be ur gpu temperature.

If that wasn't working get MSI afterburner, and go into settings and click on fan temp/speed for the "on screen" prompts

try underclocking the card, see if the problem goes away. my older 4890's would only behave at -50mhz core and memory speed.
