Unless PGL AA range has changed, you can still AA out of sear range and be close enough to MRDs and LNCs to get out when they do.

Or you can do what I do and plan melee escape routes. Melee tend to run straight back, and considering where mages usually stand, there should be a lot of free space diagonally. As long as you think/plan ahead there won't be much issue.

Based on what Elcura said I'm curious to do some tests in order to find out whether PGL can AA outside of Sear range or not.

My party went 4/4 on wins last night (I got claws and harpoon back-to-back!). Because the party was so good I was able to get into a good rhythm and solidify a strategy (even brought my overall damage to 6k, which paled in comparison to ARC but was pretty close behind THMs).
For the most part I made a point of continuously running in and out of AA range. I enter when I can, such as when Iffy is doing normal swipes or Incinerate, or has just landed. This back-and-forth allows me to avoid Sears while storing TP for WSs. Doing this also positions me further back with the other DDs, and so when Iffy casts Eruption I'm in a good position to dodge. As Elcura stated, too, if you get caught too far in, a diagonal escape path from the front is often a viable option.

I have been told that you can barely melee outside of Sear range as Pugilist, but I'm not seeing it at all. Hell, I'm pretty sure I've been hit by Sear while being out of melee range. There's quite a bit of lag involved in whether Sear hits you or not as well, so I don't think it's worth it to trust a random claim or two about that. I constantly get hit by Sear well after I'm Vulcan Bursted across the room or after I WS and step back behind people who aren't getting hit by it. Thus, running back and forth "between" Sears is also a waste of effort. Running in a diagonal-escape pattern is fine assuming the cracks are not under you. If they are, you could be putting one of the mages at risk.

If you're going to be Pugilist, just do what you can to Sacred Prism > Stoneskin, Second Wind, and do as much damage as you can. It's really no different than all the Marauders that people don't seem to have much of an issue inviting.

P.S. Fuck you people who actually get Ifrit drops.

Which jobs should I be leveling for which abilities to use and is there any sort of gear guide or monk/pug guide in general to be following?

MNKs sub classes are ARC and LNC, at the very least you'll need keen flurry from LNC and quelling strike from ARC. Invigorate, keen flurry, Blood for blood, quelling strike, and chameleon, are what I found to be the most useful for MNK.

I need some assistance with gear choices here. Assuming Garuda's Talons are the best MNK weapon (I think they are right?) I'm not getting anywhere close to the stat caps. Could anyone lend some gear advice here as to what I need to change up to get closer or is it just that hard to get the stat caps on MNK?

Well you could double meld INT on headgear for +32 (two +16s), but that'd be retarded to do over the other bonuses that the eyepatch gives. Isn't the secondary stat cap like 310 or something, and the primary like 350? So, technically you're at the INT cap, and you could get to the STR cap by swapping in a rubelite+1 ring and using a double melded int headgear. You'd be at the stat cap then, but you'd be missing out on the crit stuff from the eyepatch. I think your gear setup as you have it now is just fine.

I have question, will 53 INT headgear outdo DL eyepatch with garuda talon?

it's not really as simple as that. technically DL is better when you're at the stat caps, but if you're not, a headpiece with that much INT might be better.

Using just crafted and AF gear, what's the best set to get started on end-game?

I'll give this a shot since I just re-geared myself. Sticking just to crafted stuff here is a basic started package:

MAIN: Cobalt Claws [STR/INT x2, don't spend too much gil here since they'll be replaced]
    HEAD: Temple Circlet
BODY: Temple Cyclas / Rainmaker's Tunic [nothing worth melding though]
HANDS: Raptorskin Gloves of Slaying [STR x2/3] / Temple Gloves
LEGS: Felt Trousers [STR x2, get more than +10] / Temple Gaskins
    FEET: Temple Boots
WAIST: Raptorskin Satchel Belt (Worth just buying a Veteran's Field Belt though)
EARS: No Crafted Options (Explorer's Earring)
NECK: Electrum Gorget / Explorer's Choker
    WRISTS: Rubelite Bracelets
RINGS: Rubeite Rings x2 / Electrum Rings x2

You wanna shoot for ~345 STR/~300 INT just to be prepared for a better weapon. Pretty much any of the primal weapons are gonna be better than anything crafted at this point. You'll want Garuda's Talon primarily, but Ifrit's or Moogle's weapon will be fine and provide options for high and low accuracy fights. Electrum rings are good backups to have when fighting the tougher stuff too. I know Explorer's Choker isn't crafted, but it's your accuracy option in the neck slot and was worth mentioning.

    explorer's tunic
    explorer's moccasins

Not crafted but I assume the criteria was more along the lines of "not ra/ex".

For body you can meld savage might if you choose to use Rainmaker's.

Thanks bros, also melding, I see it occasionally but not 100% what it is. That's putting a materia on it, right?

Right. First materia of any kind is 100% success. Second one usually falls around 18-25% depending on the tier, the amount of stats it gives, whether the piece is HQ or not, etc.

On mobs your level, the damage reduction is probably not worth it if second wind is able to keep you up, but the MP you get back from it can help when you're using fist of xxxx attacks a lot. Also at end game it's incredibly good when it's absorbing an 800+ dmg hit or aoe attack.

    Spinning heel? It drains MP?
