pretty much
psure by serious endgame linkshells reddit means people who actually read reddit which by their own nature can simply be classified as carebears, pedophiles, and attention whores.
further, interviews are pcool. i can tell you a lot of things about a person by talking with them or listening to them be talked to for 5 minutes or so. i think applications are for the people i described above, but an interview where you are asked to speak like a person and a writing test to see if you can spell shit in american are ok.
Also lets you deny all the females without any bullshit drama.
I don't know what your gaming background is, but many endgame-focused guilds across the MMORPG genre use voice interviews for the same reasons job interviews take place over the phone and in-person: because you can only learn so much from text. And you may disagree with taking endgame that seriously, but for those of us who do, we prefer to uphold certain standards (which will vary between each individual guild/FC/whatever). As Churchill alluded to above, it takes about 5 minutes to figure out whether someone is an autistic serial killer.
There's gonna be a FC for everyone so no point trying to get into one that you disagree with at a philosophical level. Gender and voice comms is just the start. PS3/Gamepad vs PC/KB+M is the current rage on the BF and we haven't even gotten to the add-on phase.
Interviews are just very time-consuming to schedule and run when you and your applicant both have real lives to attend to daily. They are the "best" screening tool up front but nothing beats a trial by fire for the bigger picture in mmos.
Sure, I guess I see your point, but my stance on that subject that it's a video game, not a job... the second the game feels like it's a job is when the game becomes nothing. I've had my share of serious end game, and let's just say it's left a sour taste in my mouth. My stance is to let people play at their leisure and coordinate events when it works for everyone. Sure, it's more laid back and perhaps it isn't as progressive and fast paced like the "hardcore" endgame style guilds. I never want anyone to feel stressed out over a video game, so I run my own guild to make sure that never happens.
Back to the subject at hand, I think it's ridiculous to voice screen someone. I would never be a part of that, and just because someone is autistic (or a serial killer lol) doesn't mean they should be rejected. That's just plain judging someone. Everyone should get a chance, and with that in mind, text is absolutely fine. Also, weeding out females because they might be bitches... Really? You may have your standards, but your standards need standards.
yes it does.just because someone is autistic (or a serial killer lol) doesn't mean they should be rejected
yes, that's the point. That's just plain judging someone.
Rejecting someone on the basis they're completely inept at verbal communication is a pretty good practice.
Rejecting women on the basis of them being women, while not something I agree with, is probably done to avoid the Iliad level drama that inevitably comes with them and the virgin MMO nerds that will quarrel over them. They need to be protected from themselves.
yo cereal killers need purples too
My standards are as follows:
"There's the door, get the fuck out."
It's simple, really. Just because you're in a MMO with me does not, in any way, shape, or form, mean that I want to play with you.
So to the subject of females: 8 years of FFXI and 1 year of Guild Wars 2 has taught me one thing: Your vagina, and all of your issues, are someone else's problem, never mine.
Like someone said, there is an FC for everyone, not every FC is for everyone.
Edit: Oh and not weeding them out because they might be bitches. Weeding them out because they might have a vagina and think the internet a proper place to wield it.
Don't hit on me you silly boys.
As ClarkSammich put it, that's kind of the point. I'm pretty sure the past few pages have been dedicated to judging people who don't really seem to "get" WAR, and much of the discussion on this very forum is predicated on what looks like "judging people" to you, but to others looks like "upholding personal or organizational standards". It's not your bag, that's cool; you don't have to associate with individuals or groups you aren't going to jive with, and similarly those individuals or groups aren't going to change their standards just because they make you feel uncomfortable.
It's not even always that. If a guy is a shitty player, then he's going to get told to shape the fuck up, or get the fuck out. If a chick is a shitty player, then nobody is likely to say a goddamn thing about it because vagina. I've met plenty of women that are good at the game, but I've also met plenty who fucking suck, and didn't KNOW that they suck because nobody wanted to tell them, or if someone DID say something, then they were suddenly the asshole.
tl;dr Double Standard
Then those people need to grow some balls. I have many great female players in my shell and they are treated just like everyone else. When they fuck up, believe me they are called out on it. And certainly aren't treated any different then anyone else.
Anyways, I just want to ask one thing. Is Warrior more DD oriented than Marauder? I want to get on that job for the sole purpose of wrecking shit all day.
