Wine question - Patching/Updating Game files.

Having trouble googling info on this, so here's hoping some of ya on BG dabbled in this before.

Basically, I got a game I'm trying to wrap which according to the wine AppHQ seems to run dandy for a lot of people, but I'm having two problems so far. First off, I need to update the game itself, and I'm not sure what the proper approach is. Do I have to pre-patch it on my PC and then just copy the patched data over, or can I just copy it over into the current prefix I got running an execute it within?

Second problem is that some apps/games (including this one) I also tried have trouble detecting the dvd-rom drive, so rather than muck with terminal and manually set it, I'd rather just apply a no-cd crack, I'm guessing it'd be the same deal as updating a game?

Which game are we talking about? Installation can vary by game when it comes to WINE. Sometimes it can be installed the same way you install a Windows game, sometimes it requires some tweaking, defining launcher commands, setting custom Wine Application Settings, or just simply moving over the installed files from an already installed game on another drive. Same goes for updating.

Applying no-cd would usually be the same deal as in Windows.

WineHQ usually should have the most information when it comes to installing, so would your distro's Wine/Wine Gaming Forums.

Which game are we talking about though?

Fallout 2 I was having trouble with getting the CD to read, so I'd figure I'd just patch the game to its latest and then apply no-cd. WineHQ doesn't offer much on the game other than people saying it runs dandy out of the box.

Another game I need to patch (well, more like an upgrade) is Trackmania United, and people seem to have had no problems with it when updated. I'll just try having Wine run the files then and see if they go through, and if shit happens, boot up my PC and have it produce the files I need.

Have you tried it with Cedega? It's a paid alternative to WINE (you can probably torrent it though). Maybe it'll work for you.

I'm assuming you're on at least Ubuntu 9.04. Is the DVD/CD having trouble reading only in Linux? Does it at least mount? I would say just copy over the contents of the DVD/CD to the Linux partition/drive, or if it at least mounts; then you can just copy the contents into a folder, then install it.

According to WineHQ (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManage...estingId=49033), it patches out of the box. However, there may be different ways of patching if it's one of those fanmade patches/mods.

As for the no-cd, they seem to have a crack posted. It's in C, so it'll need to be compiled via gcc. Then replace the .exe file, but make a backup first, just incase.

Cedega is another method to installing as suggested above, which is basically a tweaked version of Wine that's more optimized for certain apps and games, but it's a paid app. Fallout2 has a platinum rating in WineHQ though, so it should work. Just make sure you're updated to the latest (1.2) and have winetricks installed. Vcrun6 via winetricks as well for the patches.

Running OSX actually, and yeah, got the latest Wine build installed.

CD runs fine when it comes to installing, but the game can't detect it when I go to run it normally. I can't tell if it's due to my DVD-ROM drive appearing as drive H: (back when games seemed to always look for D: ), or perhaps it's looking for an identifier for the drive other than what WINE has setup by default.

Not too interested in paid alternatives currently, even though they help fund the wine project.

Already got myself Photoshop and Irfanview built and self-contained as OSX apps which I've been enjoying on the side, aside from when X11 decides to be bloody slow. Only thing I wish I could do is limit the amount of CPU some of these programs have access to, but that doesn't seem possible at all. Also been mucking about with WineSkin & WineBottler on the side, but you can't do much outside of basic settings and winetricks using them if a program gives trouble.
