Reaching. The only highly specific situation I could think of would be if you are trying to run the clock DOWN, and couldn't find anything better downfield, a 0 yard catch is better than an incompletion. If the QB can dump it off for no gain, he can throw it away.

In most cases, offenses go into "Prevent" mode and have the RB run it up the gut for a grand total of five yards combined, and then a punt. But hey, that's positive yards, therefore, points. Reaching a little, yeah. QB thinks the man outside has a clear route when he doesn't (or just checks down out of habit and brain farts), intelligent receiver steps out to kill the clock to give the team another shot. Receiver makes up for a mistake by the QB.

What's not reaching, is setting up the defense. It's critical. Even screen passes for a loss of 2-3 can be beneficial to the offense the next play, or in a similar scenario later in the game.

That's a huge part of the fucking game man. This shit is chess, not checkers.

So some scoring is done differently than others.. who gives a fuck? It's all a matter of personal preference. Some want to reward a running back for making a catch.. some don't. Hell, in IDP, WRs usually get tackles when a pick is thrown. I've won games because Andre Johnson had a couple tackles from Schaub missing his target, Haha.
