Multiple flights to final destination, but different airlines

My connecting flight is a different airline than my initial flight, but they are not bought as two separate flights, bought as one flight, via orbitz.com

Will I have to pay for baggage at each airline individually or just my initial flight to get the bags to my final destination?

Yes, but you won't get very far when they fill the fuel tank with wonder bread and purple drink.

You shouldn't have to go to baggage claim at all, so I don't think so. You might have to go through security again depending on the airport you go through.

You probably have nothing to worry about, but if you must allay the paranoia: get a copy of the connecting terminal's layout from the internet. This, for example, is the LAX layout

    http://www.iflylax.com/lax_map0.html

With this you'll have an easy time figuring out if you're just moving from gate to gate (usually means you luggage gets routed for you), or if you have to physically move from one building to the next with your luggage.

This will also let you know if Orbitz sold you an impossible itinerary (i.e. 15 minutes to move yourself + your shit 2 miles and a bus ride away).

Was hoping that this would be about you almost taking one flight but getting off at last second to avoid a fiery death only for you to be chased by death manifesting itself in slippery bathtubs

This is common, and no - you will not have to pay for baggage so long as it meets the minimum requirements.

The only exception is international flights, in which case each country has its own regulations.

No you won't pay double. Even if you buy those two tickets seperately (yes you can still present your other ticket you buy seperately and have baggage sent to the final destination) they won't make you pay double.

Heck, I was flying back to Istanbul from Chicago on business class. From Nashville to Chicago I've bought a seperate ticket from American Airlines and they even allowed me to carry up to 30kg without any baggage fee (if I didn't have an ORD-IST ticket I'd have to pay 150 excess baggage fee and yes, it is just as expensive as the fucking ticket itself).

So..yeah, never paid twice even when I purchased 2 tickets seperately from different agencies/airlines.

    Another question
I have two luggages and a bookbag.

Now, they let laptops/brief cases as a personal item and one carry on. I don't want to have to check both bags.

My bookbag has a compartment to hold my laptop.

Would i be able to get away with using my backpack with laptop in it as my personal item and one of my two luggages as my carry on. That way, I only have to pay to check one bag (seeing as the second bag costs more than the first to check, I'd be saving more than 50% of two bags).

I flew southwest otw here, from FL to LA, but they don't fly to TN from LAX (which is where I'm headed, driving to GA when done there, and flying from GA back to FL), which sucks because southwest lets you check 2 bags for free

Bear in mind that any carry-ons go through security, and they'll confiscate anything they deem suspicious -- usually not a problem unless you're taking toiletries, which they will very annoyingly take.

Also carry-ons have to conform to certain sizes. Anything remotely medium-sized will have to be checked. I don't see why a book bag (even with laptop) + bag should be a problem, as long as it can fit underneath your seat in front of you.

First bag to check in should be free as long as it's less than 50 lbs.

First bag used to be free for all airlines, but now every airline charges for first bag that I know of. Except southwest, who lets you check two for free. My backpack will defeitely work as a carry on, but I want to know if I can get away with using it as my "personal item" since you get one carry on and one personal item. my carry on will be one of my two luggages, so I only have to check one, and want to use my bag as my personal

As long as it's all booked on one itinerary, you check your bag in for the first flight and it's automatically tagged through to each connecting flight. You only grab it at your destination. Any fees should be up front with the first airline.

If you wear contacts, remember to buy a tiny bottle of saline because you can't take the normal-sized ones as carry-on.
