Given that most stories don't end with the universe going into heat death and whatnot, basically every single popular story has this.

I mean, to take a small example, Star Wars left the setting with a huge political change. That shit doesn't just happen easily. So people wrote fanfiction about what happens afterwards and that is how the "Extended Universe" began.

Are you talking about the ending or the epilogue?

OK, here's the ending as I interpret it.

    Spoiler: show

The Kid's life is bookended by two different descriptions of the Leonids. He's born during an incredible one which puts his birth at 1833. He's killed by the Judge in an outhouse behind a whorehouse during another one. Depending on what interpretation you want to go with, the reasons for the Judge killing the kid can differ quite wildly, but judging the reactions of the people who come to the outhouse afterwards, the kid was killed in a very brutal fashion and possibly raped. There's plenty of reasons that can be given for why he did that, but it really all depends on what one believes the Judge was.

The epilogue is even more ambiguous. I see the epilogue as a sort of a thing that ties this novel together with his later Border trilogy. It seems to have something to do with the divining of order from chaos.

The Judge is badass in a very creepy, terrifying, evil way.
