Older games on current PC OS?

Was hoping for a little advice, i was trying to find a working version of the old shooter Shadow Warrior, and any time i try to play it on XP, the game studders extremely bad, both in graphics and sound. each frame is animated onscreen and it's unplayable. Any ideas why?

It's a DOS game, so running it under Windows may have mixed results.

http://www.dosbox.com/ is made for that sort o' thing though. It's listed as working fine as of several versions ago.
