I'm not sure if it will free up a button because you have to still put away your weapon with F by the sounds of it. If they take away F, key that would mean unlocking from an enemy would cause you to disengage from the sounds of it. I don't know about anyone else, but to me that would be incredibly annoying.

To me, no matter what they do with the system will be incredibly annoying, so long as we're locked into this "stop while you engage/disengage/do any action ever" routine. I understand that its due to motion cap and that they probably never thought to have any of their teams record a motion cap of running while drawing a weapon (seriously? Did no one watch braveheart?!), so yeah, whatever "fix" to the system will always be slow and clunky, at least when initially getting started.

It doesn't work that way. It's the system itself that will cause animation lock. They can record an animation of sheathing and unsheathing your weapon while running and you'll still get locked in place for a second because the system has a delay in animation onto action.

Stopping to pull a large weapon like an axe or spear from your back makes a lot of sense to me lol, but h2h or 1 handed weapon should be able to run and pull them out.

Edit- In XI we had to deal with the same thing, however there were ways around it, like using spellcast or a macro to change gear every time you engage. Too bad you can't do that here

    A simple analogy is...

You: Ir haz sword of bignezz.
You: Ir drwz sword of bignezz.
    Server: WTF?!....
    Server: Oh!
You: Ir haz drawn sword of bignezz.

Do you mean to say that it's impossible for them to change it to where you can pull out your weapon while running?

Just like with FFXI, right? Same system, nearly 10 years later? Do you view this as a good thing or a bad thing?

I remember getting flamed a few weeks ago for calling out the exact same thing - that some crucial things haven't been upgraded at all between the games, and I remember hearing a lot of people whining that the systems where totally, 120% different.

Shaddix: I think it depends on whether its simply the animation or the system. What we can confirm is that it isn't simply "server delay". Server delay wouldn't stop your character unless it was massive delay - it would attempt to stop things around you, and then everything would speed up to compensate afterwards. Its obviously a system (flaw) issue. They'd either have to graft the sheathing animation into a run animation, which would look absolutely terrible in this semi-realistic style, or they'd have to first change the core system, then mo-cap a set of animations for each weapon.

Either way, I don't see it happening. SE seems to like having that delay there. Perhaps they feel it harkens back to the single player FF's of old, that generally always featured a break between seeing an enemy and actually fighting an enemy.

Question: for anyone who is currently playing FFXII, I can't remember properly. Is there the same delay in that game when sheathing, or can you do it on the run? I haven't played it in quite some time.

Server response time issues, they can animate it but if they use the same crappy netcode it will lock. So it's easier to put in a server side calculation delay that basically acts as a stasis beam until the servers done. It's possible to make that beam do an animation by cleaning up how the netcode works, but why would you when you don't have to.
The reason they don't have to is in line with the same reason you got flamed.

I remember XII and yes, they had the delay when you pulled out your weapon too. Was a pain in the ass in that game as well.

It was pretty funny to attack several times while drawing a weapon in XI.

Lucavi, was that discussion around the same time when you were saying that the whole game is at least 120% copy of FFXI with nothing new whatsoever? I can't recall.

One side of the same coin as the 120% new crowd.

uhhh im pretty sure the reason they dont pull out weapons while running has little or nothing to do with any sort of server issue. It seems completely illogical that you can cast attack do skills with minimal delay, but somehow pulling out a weapon requires that you stop and wait for the server to catch up. Even if it was the case which i highly doubt, they could have fixed it if they wanted to.

Its that way because thats the way they wanted to do it, and yes in real life people who are trained with weapons rarely whip them out while running at full speed, its generally a good formula for an accident, and putting things on clasps and holsters while moving isnt as easy as it seems. but mostly i think they want you to have to stop while having to change speeds and modes, they dont really want it to be something you do in motion.

I would think by now, you would realize that it is pet peeve, and not a gameplay flaw, you can simply run around all the time with your weapon drawn if it pisses you off, unless you want to run faster, and yes irl people who have weapons drawn generally dont run at top speeds.

People in real life that have been trained with weapons have no reason to whip them out while running.

If say a big crab was chasing them then i'm sure they would manage just fine to do so.

Find any post where I said its 120% of a copy. I said it was built along the same frame as FFXI, and incorporated many of the same themes, movements, animations, and designs as the original, which is all true. I said it felt like a next gen FFXI, which it still does, stamina bar be-damned.

My Hyur lancer attacks the same as my Hume Dragoon. Many of the caves looks like a next-gen version of the basement of the Garliage Citadel. My Hyur has the same light jog as Hume. We have the same stupid weapon delay as FFXI. The list goes on and on.

Nobody said it was 120%, but if someone did, yes, that's other side of the same coin that says its 120% different, which is foolhardy.

@Alderaan: This is real life? We have mages in real life? Professionally trained mages? Huh. News to me. Lets keep the "real life" arguments out of a game world, and if we're going to throw in the real life card, lets talk about how lancers wouldn't slide forward awkwardly during a thrust aimed high, as it would be incredibly easy to parry and disorient them.

This line of thinking is getting way out of hand. I'm simply stating that its annoying to have to go back to a 2004 system when I've had it better in other games since then.
