Politics and theological discussion(only the latter being the a "waste of time" at least in the way it is presented by people like SathFath(FathSath? Forget) and Neostura. Actually probably a waste of time altogether because religions concerns themselves with nonsensical properties - literally things you cannot sense, thus cannot be described(or argued for/against) with words) are very pertinent to GENERAL discussion. In the hands of certain smart dudes on this forum, political threads are much better(entertaining, pleasant to the senses) than many videogame threads on this forum(that is to say videogame threads in the hands of JRPG fags or nostalgia jews).

I think you could distinguish between actual topical discourse (a thread asking people what they would do about their parents kicking them out for not being a good little offspring and following the same religion as their parents do, or something like that) and inane "my way is better" topics (every religion/politics thread currently that is fueled by some article proving how retarded it/the opposition is) with a little effort; getting rid of the latter would solve the headaches, while with the former I would hope most people know how to behave themselves and not start on a soapbox tirade about why everyone is going to hell or that this is just evidence of why swine flu is now an epidemic. Barring that, hammertime.

It would be doable and I think a vast majority of news threads would stick around. It would just cut out the retarded 20 page long arguments that usually only involve between 1-3 people anyway because everyone else gets sick of listening to them bitch.

But I've never had to moderate a group of people this large so I may be putting the cart before the horse on that one.

You really can't distinguish things that clearly without setting arbitrary guidelines which is really just silly.

You can't discuss almost any sort of politics since one of the largest polarizing factors in the two party system are the platforms that the parties run on. One is literally more religion than politics and one is filled with a bunch of apologetic hippies. So religion dictates a portion, at least, of the political issues, and we all know that at some level, passive or active - it doesn't matter - it plays a part in foreign policy as well.

Then there is just shit where religion fucks up on an every day level.

It is a shame to an extent that you do never see stories like, "Priest hosts Sunday school session! Doesn't rape children!" but, really, you can't discuss society or politics or culture without taking into account one of the most ingrained ideal/belief structures for some 95% of the populace.

Aside from that, I mean really, it's the fucking internet. Shit's labeled pretty clearly. If you don't want to see me and Neosutra argue with Vajra you should probably stay out of a thread titled, "what the hell, religion?"

I sure as fuck stay out of threads titled, "some strange shit growing on my dick, help me out BG medical!" because I know it's nothing I want any part of.

Eh, I still think it's doable, it's just hard to write it out in such a way that you can stand by your rules and clearly point to the reasons for an infraction. Since the mods are effectively judge, jury, and executioner, I can see the danger.

Personally I get a kick out of most arguments, even dumb ones. It's fun to see either a) a Vajra get his retardism beaten with a stick or b) an actual discourse between two opposing sides, even if neither side is particularly right or horribly well thought out.

It's the horribly polarized people who motivate even the most slightly related topics to their platform (Neosutra) that drive me up a wall. I still remember the thread that led me to put Neosutra on perma-ignore, it was some news post that was more fascinating science than religi-political bullshit and like the third post was a three paragraph SEE THIS IS WHY CHRISTIANITY IS RETARDED from him. I raged pretty hard and then decided rather than add more fuel to his fire I'd just leave him be from then on.

So yeah, I'm probably a little biased in the matter, and the aforementioned lack of moderating scope doesn't help.
