The argument that soldiers might get hurt over this, is more of a rhetorical weapon you use to assault the anti-muslim wing of the religious right.

On the practical side of US foreign interests, it doesn't help American interests in the Middle East to be perceived as being there because it is hostile towards Islam.

Really... idiots wasting time and money to troll idiots. Anyone who actually gives a shit about book-burning doesn't have an opinion worth caring about anyway. I don't give a shit about burning flags, either. If you place sentimental value in a mass-produced throwaway symbol, you're not worth consideration. The only reason to oppose this is that it's discrimination and only burning one "holy" book. Permanently destroying something? Then it would matter. A bit. Otherwise you're just filling the pockets of printing companies. If they were stealing and burning someone else's property, it would matter.

I know he can come off this way, but you gotta remember he's against -all- religion. It's only when he criticizes Islam or Israelis that people will label him as anti-____ or ____a-phobe.

My point was that singling him out as anti-islamic instead of just anti-theist completely misrepresents him. One makes him out to be a fat whitepower right-wing extremist, the other just a deeply passionate intellectual.

Anyway, back on topic, the book burning is wrong but it should certainly not be stopped. Having freedom of speech explicitly written into your constitution should trump any offense minorities might feel over this. If their is a violent backlash though, I do hope that people will grow balls this time and condemn it instead of defending the Muslims again. Thinking back to the Rushdie + Danish cartoon incident, where everyone including the UN + vatican basically said "well we disagree with the violence but they [the danish cartoonists/Rushdie] really shouldn't have provoked them in the first place".

This would also be a good opportunity to repeal that ridiculous law where flag burning is illegal. ("If burning the flag is illegal why is burning Korans also not illegal?" etc)

If you supported Draw Mohammed, but think Burn a Qu'ran is horrid, you might be a hypocrite. They're both highly insulting to Muslims, but because one was headed by fundamentalist Christians we get a shitstorm about it.
Symbolism of drawing mohammed : freedom of speech is gud.

Symbolism of burning korans : islam is teh sucks.

Symbolism of burning ANY book : rejection of knowledge, reference to previous book burning instances.

Don't get me wrong, I don't care much about this book burning, but your analogy was pretty bad.

On TV, this priest said that the koran wasn't a book of peace... of course it isn't, but did he read the bible?
It's funny the sheer amount of christians mistaking their religion for a religion of peace and neighbour loving (no homo).

This entire situation is fucking retarded. You should hear some of the logic I've listened to.

"If the Muslims have a right to build their Mosque at ground zero then this guy has a right to burn some religious book. They're both insensitive to somebody so they shouldn't."

    ... Really?

Meh. I don't like the idea of burning literature, much less religious books to be honest. Mind you, I'm very much against organized religions.

I think the Muslims should go there, and just have a bible burning. 1 Bible for every Qur'an. /shrug. Muslims over in the middle east are crazy. Honestly though, they don't need more reason to hate the US than they already to. Shit is endless. This doesn't help.

Why? They're making some good money off the Qur'ans all these idiots are buying up to burn anyways. I'd take the cash and laugh at the crazy white folks.

we burn flags sure (its still wrong), but we dont burn holy scriptures, even if we believe they were altered by man...have some respect yo.

there is a difference between freedom of speech and insults, people tend to mix those 2 up.

might as well have a burn a muslim day, since the Quran is memorized word by word by muslims

I agree with the respect comment. Saying insults are separate from freedom of speech is false though. We have the right to insult people if we wish. You're confusing political correctness with freedom of speech.

Don't burn the Qu'ran so as not to offend Muslims...they might go all bat shit crazy and kill people.

Seems the running theme here is the perpetual Muslim butt-hurt.

A population that has known nothing but imperialist interference and civil war for an entire generation enraged that its culture continues to suffer disrespect and interference = 'butt-hurt.'

    'kay.
