There is a lot of symbolism in dreams, which your subconscious uses to make sense of the world while it's cramming the day (week, or month) into your memory.
Dreams tend to be weird because you aren't actively using your brain to interpret, it's doing it on its own (which is why they feel so insane or odd). For example, going out and drinking with your friends could represent a desire to go out drinking with your friends, or you could have just gone drinking, or it could mean nothing.
They're just too open for interpretation for it to mean anything significant, unless they're repetitive. Then they generally represent an underlying event that may require close, conscious attention.
For example, I just had a dream before I woke up this morning about my classmates in medical school studying for a big exam and wanting to smoke a big bowl of meth while lighting a joint. There was one female classmate I thought would listen to me, but in the end they all ended up doing it as I walked off. Then I woke up.
This could mean many things, or it could mean nothing. One literal interpretation is that based on my stress lately I feel like nobody listens to me. It could also mean that my classmates do their own thing despite my role as class president and regardless of my advice they continue to make mistakes that could cost them. It could also be because I talked to my mom earlier about my brother, who was a meth-head.
See where this is going?
