To be fair, you only get to choose your own paradigms half way through the game, at which point I didnt know you could actually choose your own paradigms. Someone had to tell me that you could and at which point I had a profound WHAT moment because I kept trying to change them earlier in the game and getting pissed off that I could not. At some point I was able to change paradigms without realizing it so I kept going through with shitty paradigms that were not built correctly for the given situations.

Yeah basically, I mean you can do a great deal of the game before beating the end boss, but it's only 1-2 chapters away or something iirc and really not worth going around and doing other shit before hand because the final boss is actually rather easy

Right about the time the game opens up you can start doing all those missions and stuff and that's where the game really starts for most people
