Game CD went KAPOW inside dvd-rom

I wanted to install Starcraft 1(or do we still just say starcraft..? lol) for shit and giggles, so I start the install. I noticed that for some reason it was slow as fuck, but didn't bother looking up why. I just opened Left 4 Dead 2 and play that while starcraft install. After about 30 mins of Left 4 Dead, I hear a giant POWWW. Out of panic, I shut down the computer holding the power button down.

At that point, I had no idea it was the cd so I opened up the case. Everything looked fine, but I checked on the dvd-rom and could hear all the pieces tumble around.

I removed all the pieces now, but i'm curious why did my cd just fucking blow up?

Also since it happened (15 mins ago) my OS is taking 3x longer than it usual does to boot (win7 x64).

If the CD was old as fuck and damaged there's a very small chance it got disintegrated by the stress of a high speed drive.

As to why your machine is operating slowly I'd take a much closer look and make sure there isn't a broken piece of something or other jamming up a fan, and look for damaged cables inside.

Dvd-rom was a closed area there's no way CD shrapnel could have escaped.
Game was starcraft 1 so it waasssssss old but not damaged.

Shrapnel need not have escaped, if the 'kapow' was forceful enough it could have shaken something else inside the case loose and that needs attention. Simply glancing inside probably isn't enough to identify if a cable is loose or if something else is overheating.

    GPU temp 45°c
    CPU temp 53°c

Normal temps. My computer has been running fine since I rebooted it, it's not actually slow outside of booting.

is the DVD-ROM still attached and part of the bootup sequence somehow? The computer might be attempting a lengthy test on it if it has power and that process is just 'timing out.'

Yes it is still attached, I don't know if OS checks that during boot. I'm gonna be brave and try another cd now.

EDIT: I'm not sure I want to do it lol.

On a side note, if you still want to play SC1 even after the busted disc, just register your serial for it on Battle.net, and it'll provide you a link to an ISO of it in your account.

Tried booting without the disc drive plugged in? It's probably hanging up on some diagnostic test.

This is why optical drives belong in the last century.

What Omni said, virtual drives emulate real drives and are generally a good way to run your games/programs/whatever

In regards to finding out if the drive is slowing down your boot process:

When booting the comp theres usually a thing that says "Press [key] for BIOS", so you can enter the BIOS and find your way to the boot settings, there you can find your drive and just disable it so it will not boot. Alternatively you can just open up the comp and remove the drive/drive connections, both are very simple, and then you can restart to see if the issue was resolved
