I've read the series and watched the Swedish films. The books are very good and I've enjoyed them quite a lot. There's going to be an American version now and I'm looking forward to it because Daniel Craig has signed on to be Mikael Blomkvist. I've not been able to picture Mikael as anyone but since I heard that.

David Fincher is set to direct a Hollywood adaptation of the book, for release in December 2011. According to The Guardian, George Clooney, Johnny Depp, and Brad Pitt were all interested in playing the central role of Mikael Blomkvist, but Daniel Craig was officially confirmed as the lead in July. Twilight's Kristen Stewart and Juno's Ellen Page have expressed interest to play Lisbeth Salander, as well as Carey Mulligan. Producer Søren Stærmose of Yellow Bird, who holds the screen rights to the books, has been approached by directors including Quentin Tarantino, Ridley Scott, and Martin Scorsese. On December 16, 2009 leading Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet reported that Sony Pictures Entertainment are in final negotiating with Yellow Bird about the film rights according to Yellow Bird Managing Director Mikael Wallén. Steve Zaillian has been in discussions to adapt the first book.

I was talking to my husband after we came out of 'Inception' the other day and I mentioned that Ellen Page would be an excellent Lisbeth Salander. She'd definitely be my top choice. Kristen Stewart would be a terrible choice and I hope whoever suggested that dies. Carey Mulligan is too old.

Sadly, Ellen Page is not in the running anymore.

Our sources confirm The Daily Beast’s report that director David Fincher has narrowed casting choices for the highly coveted role of Lisbeth Salander in the Hollywood adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo down to four relatively unknown leading ladies. None of the big-name candidates, such as Carey Mulligan or Ellen Page, have moved forward either by their own choice or Fincher’s. (One source tells EW that Fincher offered the meaty part opposite Daniel Craig to Natalie Portman but she turned it down. Calls to Portman’s reps were not returned.)

The four actresses left in the running are Rooney Mara, who recently finished working for Fincher on his upcoming film The Social Network; French actress Lea Seydoux, who appeared as Isabella of Angouleme in this year’s Robin Hood, as well as last year’s Inglourious Basterds; and two Australian actresses: Sarah Snook and Sophie Lowe. Snook recently starred in Julia Leigh’s erotic fairy tale Sleeping Beauty while Lowe is a more established actresses in her home country, appearing in a number of local productions, including Blessed and Blame. Fincher had also been pursuing South African singer/rapper Yo-Landi Vi$$er from the group Die Antwoord, but the artist isn’t interested in an acting career.

Fincher is supposed to begin shooting the film in the early fall and is likely to have his decision in the next week or so. Sony Pictures has already scheduled the movie for Dec. 21, 2011.

I've only watched/read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo so far. The book was great but I didn't think it translated well into a movie, it was just too slow and wasn't suspenseful at all.

The first one was pretty decent, mostly because swedish movies sucks ass. The other 2 were made as mini-series for swedish televison, thus not really having the pacing for a single sitting.

I wonder who they will end up with as lisbeth, cause its gonna be a hard act to beat compared to the original

I liked the first one. The only movies Sweden can do half-decently is comedies mostly, any attempt at serious movies or action movies normally fall short due to the fact that most Swedish actors overact. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was one of the better serious movies, though.

Out of the 4 being considered for Lisbeth Salander, I think Rooney Mara would fit best, although personally no one can beat Noomi Rapace in that role, she was awesome in all three movies.

Everybody and their grandmother has been wondering who will saddle up alongside Daniel Craig as the alluring Lisbeth Salander in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," but Watson's name has been curiously off the list. Looking at her now, I think she would be a great choice for the role. It's an edgier, darker franchise than the one she's just come off of, making the career move just as drastic a change as her decision to chop off her hair.

Boom! The Who Gets to Be Lisbeth Salander sweepstakes has finally come to an end, with relative unknown Rooney Mara beating out basically every other twentysomething actress in the land (Natalie Portman, Carey Mulligan, Scarlett Johansson, Emma Watson, etc., etc.) to nab the lead role in the David Fincher–directed The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the first in what will be a trilogy of films based on the Stieg Larsson novels. The 25-year-old Mara will soon be seen in The Social Network, which co-stars recently appointed Spider-Man Andrew Garfield (they have lots to talk about now!), and will probably look very nice with short, spiky black hair, a nose ring, and lots of tats.

the ending of two was kind of to convenient/implausible (if thats the right word?) for my tastes, he should have either killed Lisbeth outright or had it play out differently at Zalachenko's ranch to achieve getting both Lisbeth and him in the hospital, instead of having her somehow survive 3 gunshots to the head and recover in like 3 months? I also was disappointed with how incompetent the Section seemed in the last third of the 3rd book and how forced to tie up loose plotholes the epilogue seemed outside of Kalle Blomkvist's/Lisbeth's reunion at the end.

I think Daniel Craig will do fine, havent seen the girl cast as Lisbeth in anything but hoping for the best lol. I think Ellen Page is physically the perfect person to play Lisbeth but not sure if she would've been able to pull off the character quite as bad ass as she was in the books. Will the setting of the new movie(s) still be Sweden? or will they try to adapt it to America?

The superhuman powers Lisbeth kept acquiring throughout the third book irritated me. Not kill her, but the injuries she sustained were ridiculous, especially since she dug herself out of a grave after sustaining them. Injure her, sure, but it went too far. The section stuff just got silly after a while, totally incompetent.

I hear that Larssen's girlfriend is being pressured to keep writing the series because she helped with the first three novels. They did leave several loose ends in the last book so that wouldn't be so bad to do.

I tried reading the plot of the series on Wikipedia and immediately fell asleep.

can someone give me the gist of series w/o revealing anything? the wiki did a horrible job

Basically, its about an anti social computer hacker with Asperger's who has a very dark past that is revealed and untangled over the course of the series (2nd half of book 2/book 3 mainly) and an intrepid reporter who is like a police detective in his thoroughness and investigative ability.

Book 1 is about the two working together to solve the disappearance of a teenage girl from one of the wealthiest families in Sweden like 30 years beforehand (but what they uncover goes far beyond a simple disappearance)

Book 2/3 are more closely related and focus on an investigation and repercussions of the investigation by the reporter's magazine into the white slave sex trade in Sweden and like the previous book it also spirals out of control going far beyond simple prostitution, getting more and more elaborate of a conspiracy in both the latter half of book 2 and throughout book 3.

The first one is far and away the best one, but the other two are a lot more suspenseful once you get into them.
