There does seem to be a sleep induced stiffy effect.

According to anime, the proper way to woo a lady is to be extremely shy and wait for the entire anime to progress to actually make a move. There may be a few times where you almost kiss, but your ditzy friends interrupt/crash into you right before it happens.
