difference between macross and robotech is mostly the fact that out of the 3 series used for robotech only super dimension fortress macross is actually part of the macross series. southern cross and mospeada had nothing to do with macross. they were modified to seem like they were when they were made part of the robotech series by harmony gold back in the 80's.

Its like voltron. both voltron series were made to seem like they were one universe but they are based off two different unrelated anime series, go lion and dairugger.
