Console games are often locked at 30FPS because a constant 30FPS looks much better than wild fluctuation from 35-60FPS.

PC games are rarely locked because you can just buy better hardware.

Yeah, but it still needs to be allowed by the developer.. and I'm sure Nvidia/AMD would love to havethe game support CF/SLI because it means more sales for them

Probably the fact that they locked the first one, so why not lock this one?

The important part is that -they'll- never tell us -why- they do what they do, regardless of what they do. Obviously I'm hoping for 60 or even an unlocked framerate - I can't see why it has to remain at 30 or even 60 when you're spending most of your time in this game on the ground. Its not like you're on some flying mount, forcing them to spend more time rendering all objects from air angles as well as from the ground.

The only thing I can think of is that they're once again capping shit due to a combination of consoles and from their own design standpoint, which never seems to be allowing the user the freedom to make the choices they want to make, be it through hardware or in-game.

Not even close to double sales. If you think even 1/2 the people who are going to play FFXIV are going to have dual video cards then I'm sorry to be the one to tell you that you're very wrong. Not to mention FFXIV is such a small percent of their market, if you think 500k or even 1million players are going to even be a dent in their sales...

Honestly all your posts seem to just be trying to find supporting facts so you can be angry at SE for something you seem to know nothing about. Yes you can see 30fps, but guess what you can see 60fps as well.

Let me ask you one thing, do you have a card that can support the game running at full specs (you got, was it, 5k+ on the benchmark) with HD output to a monitor that can support 1080p at a 60/75Hz refresh? If not please kindly STFU and stop trying to find reason to rage.

The increase from sli/xfire is what 20-30% anyway? I guess you could just use one card for AA/AF etc.

(never used sli/xfire btw, and don't feel the need to atm.)

Current generation SLI implementations, for games with proper support, can realize the full 100% increase over a single GPU. The current "hack" used for benching XIV with SLI isn't accurate, you'll see single cards getting 3300 and then "SLI" getting 4300, which is abysmal. 30% isn't normal, it means something is wrong (or not supported).

This is why people who use multi-gpu rigs are raising such a fuss over proper SLI support. SE isn't saying a damn thing about the 30 cap or multi-GPU support, which is horseshit considering there are only ~6 weeks until release and a lot of people are parting out new builds for the game.

They just need to say SOMETHING official about it, but we probably won't find out until release, unless they do the right thing and throw it into phase 3 for testing or simply answer the questions.

I have 2 systems. One older upgrade one has 5830 now, will upgrade processor to Q8400/9400

    27" Asus LCD with 1080p 60hz

Second system - main, my own: bought so far: i860, corsair hx850, XFX 5870, patriot viper 2 4Gb ram, scythe mugen 2 cooler, 500gb seagate hdd. I just need to get the HAF X case and Asus p7p55d-e pro board and I'm done.

    5000 bench, sure without OC.

We know why 11 was locked at 30, hopefully they wont do the same thing in 14. Also i dont think it's going to be locked at 30 since they demonstrated 3d. Dont act like a 30 fps cap isn't going to affect everyone. This game is going to run for ten years

When I fraps'd the bench I was hoping it'd be relatively uncapped. This is completely unacceptable and can't be included with release.

Maybe beta gameplay is only capped to gauge playability with various hardware like lolMacBooks, as seen from some beta testers bitching. /hoping

    XI rant

The problem with FFXI is that it's using Direct3d 8. The drivers from both nvidia and ATI are using the vast majority of the CPU time, and since all the work is performed in one thread, only one core is loaded no matter how many cores you have. It turns out that if you disable vertex shaders with a tool called "DLL Explorer", processor usage drops down to practically nothing even in a packed whitegate or gigantic campaign battle.

XIV is already behind the curve starting out with DX9, and going by their past behavior it's a virtual certainty it will never be upgraded past that!

FFXIII isn't the type of game where alot of stuff is going on though, and it's not the best example of ps3 graphics either. There's no way FF14 will run 60fps on ps3 in crowded areas, it probably will be capped at 30.

    ff13 is 30 http://www.lensoftruth.com/?p=18555

only racing(some) fighting and some fps games are 60fps on consoles

But HALLO, ff14 was running in 3D at E3. That can't be done at 30fps, the cap is obviously going to be removed.

They could keep the overall framerate at 30 by toggling each eye's frame 4 times over the standard 3D display refresh rate of 120Hz. Looking over nvidia's docs, it seems like the driver manages the framerate to refresh & left/right surface displaying ratios automatically. Seems unlikely that SE would increase the FPS if it's at all possible for 3D to work at low FPS. If you look at Nvidia's marketing materials, they even tout an ability to display static images in 3D with a "JPEG stereo format".

So 3D for ff14 only runs at 15fps, that's pretty worthless imo.
