No, i still don't see how there's more money not letting gays get married than letting them get married. Marriages are great cash cows because lots of people want to spend thousands on a piece of paper.

Why do people think that old people are the reason for opposition against same-sex marriages? Homosexuality is older than your grandparents guys, it's a problem with our society in general. For every old person against same-sex marriage there is a young person against it too. There are also 'old people' who when they were your age were just as understanding of homosexuality. It's always existed and religion is probably a bigger road block than old group-think.
I'm pretty sure older generations have been conditioned to hide homosexuality, not flaunt it like people do today.
Though, I'm not sure where that would fall on a yes/no vote on Prop.8.
If anything I'd argue it's more a problem with older people tending to be set in their thinking. Sure the younger generation on average may be more tolerant but it's not 'just old people' and I don't even think old people are a big enough majority to direct any anger towards concerning the issue.
Was very disappointed when Prop 8 passed (not a Cali resident or I would have voted against). Glad to see it was declared unconstitutional (for now). It restores a tiny bit of my faith in humanity.
The argument between magus and demos#s is boring. Let's talk about fisting instead.
...and old people are much more likely to strongly hold on to their beliefs and not waver in the message of the bible because they are already accustomed to hating gays. It might take longer in other states but the fact remains, as more and more old people die out, the US becomes more tolerant, as do individual states. I don't even know why you are arguing against this lol
you have to look at it at from a larger perspective, particularly the one from which anyone who actually has some political or economic power looks at it and gives a fuck whether gays marry.
a) it perpetuates conservative values, traditional heterosexual gender roles, etc, which pay dividends 1) via marketing for both media and products, 2) via votes and other "you agree with me that fags are bad so now do this for me" stuff.
b) it keeps popular argument focused on individual actions rather than larger systems or individual *criminal* actions like wars, gross tax cuts for the wealthy, broken campaign promises, etc.
you may as well ask "who benefits economically from not giving women rights?" it's like, really? "who benefits from growing apples?" lots of people. lots and lots.
edit: incidentally, this is one reason i argued with that guy awhile ago about whether or not religion is evil. if you think the people in power are fighting gay rights because they believe God wants them to, you are a fucking sucker. "i'm doing it b/c God wants me to and it JUST SO HAPPENS to be one of a large battery of things that perpetuate my privilege." just like God wants you to cut taxes for the rich.
you guys are arguing like a gay married couple
1) Idiot commentators and Fox News, who get advertising from these sociopathic cocksuckers.
2) Greedy fucks who run evangelical or LDS churches, who raise money to sponsor hate campaigns like Prop 8 and then skim off the donations into their pockets.
3) Billionaires, who benefit from all these fucking crazy hate-filled bigots voting Republican.
These reasons sound more political than economic and you did not give one specific and concrete instance where keeping gays from marrying provides a purely economic benefit.
#2 makes the most sense.
Eh. Olo's is the closest to an actual economic benefit from keeping gays from getting married. Churches asking for money to fight gay marriage (just as long as the money isn't actually being used to fight gay marriage). Although they can do that even if gays can get married.
