Windows 7 BSOD installation.

I decided to reformat my desktop, since its been pretty cluttered lately (and since my wow account was hacked few weeks ago)

Installation seems to go fine, until it restarts to finalize the installation. I get a BSOD, and the stop error code points to a general hardware error. CPU, GPU (brand new one, and old one tested) and PSU all seem fine. I'm currently testing my memory.....


Yet, i've tried to install windows XP, and windows vista in the meantime..... and both install/load just fine.

Is this just a issue with windows 7 installations, or did I maybe just get lucky installing windows xp/vista?

are you trying to install the same type 64/32 bit of each os you tried? are you sure there are no defects with the dvd you are using to install windows 7?

Doesn't Vista/7 do a CRC check of the sort during install to ensure nothing is corrupted?

XP is 32 bit, Vista is 64 Bit, and 7 is 64 bit.

This is the exact same copy of windows 7 I was previously running on the same desktop.

Check that you're actually pushing your GPU all the way into the PCIe slot? Generally it wouldn't even boot if that was the case, but you never know... Also remove the DVD after the first reboot.

Try removing all your RAM except for one stick and try again. I remember having >2 gigs during a fresh install created problems awhile back.

Thats part of my "memory testing" ..... did the usual ram testing, all came out fine. Now i'm trying one stick at a time

Yeah, but I remember a bug where even if your RAM was perfectly functional, the install would fail if you had more than 2 gigs inserted during the installation. I have no idea if that's still the case, but it's worth a shot.

try installing storage drivers provided when you get asked what disk to install w7 to, put em on a usb stick or something.

I got BSOD's on windows xp installs without them occasionally, haven't had it happen with any of my w7 installs but you never know.

Bad memory, bad hard drive, bad motherboard, bad installation media, overheating, bad gpu. All of these can cause blue screens during installs.

Did this....... and the installation completed with no problems.

Ok, so guess it was not a random BSOD install error.

Keep getting the error 0x0000124 when trying to do anything normally on the desktop.

Tried my old video card, same issue.

Tried installing windows in a new hard drive, same issue.

Testing the shit out of my memory, same issue.

Anything else before believe my mobo is just fucked?

Might be a dumb question but are you installing it from a burned DVD? Try making a new one or use a thumbdrive, I've seen this happen with corrupted install disks. I absolutely hate using writeable disks as they always seem to have a shelf-life of about 2 days.

So, just decided to try a new mobo....... and no more issues.

Was a pain in the ass to find a mobo that supports socket 775, and DDR2 still. Everything in microcenter was either a mATX or only supports i3/i5/i7 or AMD lol
