So it's pretty much SMNC all over again? Eurgh.
Dota has one of the steepest learning curves in existence because playing proficiently means understanding every how every hero out of the 100+ pool works. This is so you know how to use them if your team needs you to play or, or at the very least you understand what that hero can do to you and your teammates so you can make the correct decision about what to do in any given situation against that hero.
If you truly want to get into this, first read Purge's guide so you have a handle on how the game actually works. http://www.playdota.com/guides/welcome-to-dota-you-suck
Then start with at least 50 games with just bots for you to just practice mechanics of last hitting and denying and ganking and such. Then, play every hero in a practice game at least once so you understand what they can do to you, even if you never intend to play that hero.
The oldschool Dota community is very competitive and tryhard. The lower brackets are filled with more people new to the game.
Oh and as a new player, you are expected to take the role of support (equivalent to MMO healer) as it is an easier role with more room for error. You should NOT be playing the carry role.
Haven't been on here in awhile, but looking to see if anyone from bg still plays frequently or wants to team up sometime. My steam profile is Tahona
Can the mouse scroll wheel be configured to cast abilities/use items?
I don't know about the wheel but I'm sure mice with multiple buttons can be configured to use spells and abilities.
Anyone doing any item trading?
Is it possible to get the money from a disconnected guy?
Pretty sure the gold evenly distributes itself out between you and your allies but don't quote me on that. I know you can sell their items and the gold from that is split up.
The gold only splits after 5 mins, after they've abandoned.
If the person abandons by confirmed leave game and trying to queue again, the gold is split automatically and you can sell items.
Otherwise you must wait 5 minutes, and it sucks if they come back and are naked and goldless.
The one caveat is if they abandon before picking a hero, you are stuck without the gold for the entire game. I had to play a 5v4 once like that and there was 5000 gold the leaver had that we could never access.
So as someone who hasn't played dota in a long time, it seems to me that some game mechanics which were originally designed out of necessity seem to have been maintained out of some sake of tradition rather then being improved. Like Omni's ult adds a shitton of armor and some hp regen rather then straight up physical invincibility since invincible units weren't targetable in war3. Which seems doubly weird since there's stuff like Spiked Carapace which does damage immunity (which btw is possibly the greatest ability in the history of anything) on the old engine anyway now. And the mini stun effect on some nukes, which I thought was only added to interrupt channeling stuff like tp could have been changed to just stop casting instead of the .2 stun or whatever, seems like a more elegant solution.
I mean luna gets to use orbs now at least but still seems like there's more they could do on a new engine idk maybe I just haven't played enough to appreciate all the meta or whatever. Stuff like pudge not being able to use dagger seems weird too since apparently he can drag people across the map with a tp scroll anyway.
Just to confirm, the only way for me to get a beta invite now is to hope I get selected? This game went off my radar due to school work last semester and the knowledge that d3 would be playable soon. But since d3 is a complete failure to me I started looking into other games again and re-found this thread. I did some reading up on the game and got very interested. Never played anything like dota before but I want to start.![]()
The explicit goal was to transfer any mechanic that imposed a skill requirement. So whereas Starcraft II and HoN added mechanics like smart casting, Dota 2 will never include this. This is also why the fog is copied exactly from Warcraft III, and there are low ground mechanics still.
Invulnerability makes you immune to targeting from that source of damage. The reason for this is so you can't waste an single target spell on a unit that it won't affect, so that way you can spam that spell over and over waiting for the moment magic immunity wears off (think a spinning Juggernaut with no health running from a Lina with Laguna ready)Like Omni's ult adds a shitton of armor and some hp regen rather then straight up physical invincibility since invincible units weren't targetable in war3. Since all right clicks are classified as physical damage, even if they have magical components such as Obsidian Desolator's orb or Diffusal magic burn or Sylla's Entangle, invulnerability vs. armor based invulnerability would be an indirect buff as it would prevent these attacks from being possible (the regen on Omni's ult is not meant to keep a target alive through magic damage, rather it's supposed to be an aoe HoT).
You could theoretically code physical invulnerability differently from magic immunity. Although I don't see a need particularly to do this, and I'd worry about interactions between invulnerability vs having a flat armor buff.
The mini-stun durations are relevant because different stuns have different durations, and it is important because it changes the interruption flow. Some ministuns are meant to function as perma-locks and are longer durations for that reason (Cold Snap, Headshot). Some are clearly just meant to be interrupts (Void)
The point of the dagger ban is so that you can't blink into impassable terrain, hook, then blink out and leave a hero stranded. (It's worse on VS when she can blink somewhere then just swap and walk out)I mean luna gets to use orbs now at least but still seems like there's more they could do on a new engine idk maybe I just haven't played enough to appreciate all the meta or whatever. I believe, but am not 100%, that Force Staff has some careful coding to make sure you can't replicate this trick with pushes. There's some terrain that has to be blink or Furion teleported onto, and that's specifically where you don't want Pudge and VS getting to with a blink dagger.
Albeit theoretically Rubick can bypass this with a blink dagger and the right spell loaded.
Noob question: When and why should i stack jungle creeps??
Saw a guy stacking a lot of creeps and not killing them
if you approach a camp of neutrals that you won't finish by :54 on the clock, you should stack them because it gives you a second(or third if you stack again) set of mobs to kill for more exp and gold.
it's pretty much that simple. now that you know, if you don't stack i'll ban you.
