    Linksys WRT54G Router Issues

So yeah, as topic says. First, lol @ Linksys, I know.

Anyway, last night I tried to get into the router to fix some port forwarding and what not, but couldn't log-in, so I was like "Well, I'll just hard-reset so the default password will be back, np." Yeah.. big problem. The password did reset, but shit went downhill from there. My internet would no longer work properly, so I had to tech support it and all that. Well I got help and had the modem working fine, but I couldn't connect through the router for the longest time. It wouldn't pick up the IP automatically like it should.

So anyway, I defaulted my IP to 192.168.2.1 (for the router) since the modem was 192.168.1.1 and there were conflicting interests I think. Then my next problem came with that dreaded "NAT Type 3" shit on the PS3. Couldn't fix that.. and it's still a problem. I have full internet capability hardlined, but wirelessly is my issue right now. I tried the Linksys tech support, but they wanted like 30 bucks, and then AT&T's hardware tech support wanted $114.99. Fucking crazy.

So I come to BG Tech support for assistance. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like it's on it's way to being a brick, tbh. Fuck those prices - for $40 you can get a new D-Link wireless router. That's what I ended up doing when my Linksys died.

I had the same issue as you with the same model. This led me to try flashing the firmware to DD-WRT, which I then bricked somehow. I ended up just getting a WRT54GL from Newegg

    Sorry couldn't be any help

S'alright. I'd appreciate any other sort of input. I fixed this problem before, but I can't, for the life of me, remember how I did it.

What version is the router? Just asking cause you can flash DD-WRT onto certain versions of that model. Pray you dont have v7, since thats the only version not supported.

Next thing, you need to convert your modem into bridge mode. This lets the modem act as a modem only, and lets your router do the routing. If you provide a brand / model number for the modem I can walk you through it.

If you dont have v7, see below for installation instructions.

This firmware is so much better for these devices, you will love it. After you get it up and running.

my router is the uh.. WRT54Gv4 I believe, and my firmware's like.. version 1.01. I hard reset it a few days ago, so it reset everything back. I think I remember bridging my modem, but I'm not 100% on that.

My modem is the Netopia 2241N-006. It's a silver DSL Modem provided by AT&T. It's not terrible.

Not sure on the firmware thing for the router, though. I mean I never did that before when I fixed up mmy PS3 and all that jazz. I just can't remember if bridging the modem/port forwarding on the router is all I did or not.

It sounds like bridging the modem could do it. I didn't think to check that when I was having issues since it was a little frustrating having to run up and down the stairs to work on mine.

If its truely v4 i highly recommend you get dd-wrt on the router, it runs SO much better and is even easier to forward ports and all that jazz.

You will have to flash the mini version:
    http://dd-wrt.com/routerdb/de/downlo...neric.bin/2123

Then you can flash the full version (you have to do mini first because linksys firmware upgrade utility only supports 3mb images):
    http://dd-wrt.com/routerdb/de/downlo...neric.bin/1964

If its not v4, see the URL i posted earlier and click the actual version. You can find the version on the bottom of the router.

As far as switching the router bridge mode, this is what you need to do:
    Plug modem directly into PC.
Open browser and browse to 192.168.1.1
On the left side you should see Bridge Mode.
I'm not sure the specifics in here, but once you get it into bridge mode it is acting as truely just a modem, you will then need to plug the modem into the WAN port on your router (the netgear) and the pc into slot 1. Then you login to the router and set it up to use PPPOE (i think you have DSL with this modem, if you know your PPPOE login/pw you set it here, if its cable you leave it to obtain automatically).

The problem is your forwarding ports on your linksys router, but that really the second router so the rules don't matter because the first router doesn't have them.

    Internet > Modem/Router > Router > PC1/2/3/4/5/6

Another option would be to just get a switch instead of using the linksys router, but I have a good feeling that bridge mode and letting your router(linksys) handle your connection will fix everything. Add DD-WRT on top of that and you have an easier to configure router too.

Wow. Thanks for all that info. I'm actually wary about flashing stuff..though I may definitely look into it if a quick bridge doesn't fix it, which I'm sure it will. I'm 90% sure that's how I fixed my stuff last time, but wasn't 100% sure. Connections were a pain to figure out, but I fixed that, though. Everything's up and running in bridge mode.

Again.. thanks a ton for the help in this. Tech support wanted 30 bucks for what you basically told me, and I had a good idea to do myself, Haha. Shit's crazy.
