You don't understand, there won't be a need to balance it for the hardcore at launch because they won't be there. People are canceling there pre-orders just at the mere 'thought' that their play style will be punished. If the system isn't relaxed or out right gone by launch, this game is going to be Dead on Arrival. And I am one the more moderate people you will ever meet when it comes to expectations. I have defended lots of decisions they have done so far for this game and said to wait till launch when it comes to content and the like, but this one single system has made me do a 180. They need to get rid of it, replace it with something that actually rewards casuals and doesn't punish anyone or get ready to see their game die within a couple months. They have no idea just how much vitriol they are about to experience on the beta boards. And they thought the mouse feedback was bad.
I don't even look at it as a "hardcore issue" - its a freedom issue. How can you restrict XP gain in that manner? You're better off simply giving 200 class XP per kill and a 22,000~ TNL like in FFXI. At least that method is stable, and you always know what your goal is, and how to get there.... you know, like every freakin' MMO on the planet?
Treating Class XP with skillup algorithms and then restricting it on to of the already random nature of skillups is... baffling. I honestly can't see the "positive" that someone high up in SE command must have seen when pushing this idea. Typically you want to avoid pissing off large swaths of your player base...
Hopefully 2 years from now we'll all look back on shit like this retarded idea as the "good ol dark days of the beta", when we're all rocking our high-quality, high-gloss armor and our catgirls are all fanning their asses around and the XP is flowing like wine through our skillchains and levequests. This really seems like one of those "Beta-only" ideas that every game has that never sees the light of a retail launch.
That's why I haven't stopped my pre-order yet. I seriously doubt there will be one positive bit of feedback on this system now that people know what its intention is. Before people were wondering if it was bugged or something they added into beta to force people to level other things and test stuff. But now that people know they intend to put this into launch expect the negative feedback to sky rocket exponentially.
This just in: FFXIV is to MMO's what Avatar: Last Airbender is to movies
Hahaha you'd like to think so wouldn't you.
/look @ hardware mouse -- oh sorry, we're looking into it.
/look @ 48hr leve cd -- oh sorry, we like the way it plays at the moment so we're keeping it
They might hear the voices, but as people keep quoting at me on the beta forums, we're not the developers and they don't have to listen to us.
Sure, it's stupid of them not to for something like this, but hey, we're not developers etc etc...
I don't know of many people that were threatening to cancel Game orders and subscriptions over the 48 timer, most people just expected to have other things to do or at least be given the option to grind whatever they felt like. Hardware mouse is just a matter of them not knowing the market outside of Japan but THIS feature I can't imagine anyone in any country liking and I'm sure they will hear it... BIG TIME from everyone.
But guys - thanks to surplus xp you can still keep playing ffxi when you're unable to play 14. See? We didn't have to obsolete your old game after all.
xoxo
Square Enix
Another thing about surplus.
Treasures of the Main and whatever the followup was. They're level-locked. You can't start the second one until level 10. Can't start the third one until level 20.
Now I play MMORPGs mostly for two things: class progression (and with SE's mantra of "growth" being important, the armoury system sounded {at least until today} great for me); and secondly, story.
Now if I can't experience the story because I am cockblocked by a surplus system.... well, you can see while RPG players are going to hate this system as much as hardcore raiders.
Someone start up a petition for this surplus crap! Get all the premier sites on it and all possible beta testers.

Guys make sure you also send this info to all the gaming sites as well. Make sure you get the word to the other gaming journalists out there too. If there is one thing that will make them change, its vitriol so large it makes headlines. They changed Pandemonium Warden and Absolute Virtue once the absurd neccesary hours for defeat became known at major traffic gaming sites.
It seems like they keep going backwards in alpha phases... Phase2 introduce surplus.... Phase 3 introduce that gay ass double target thing for AoE spells. Game is gonna trashed in Japan, Europe, and US...
I can deal w/no AH and bad UI, but they have gone backwards from XI in some things they got perfectly, so I don't get it. Never seen a company so unable to learn from other companies faults or their own negatives / positive influences.
All i know is the surplus/fatigue thing alone will get this game crushed by any upcomming mmo/expansion in the future this year.
Graphic's alone this game is un-matched but who honestly is gonna give a crap when peter north comes out and cockblocks your exp every few hrs forcing you into some other cluster fuck for a few hrs till he comes out again and cockblocks you on that job.
Not to mention part of the joy playing in an MMORPG game world is getting higher up so you can go to that next 'cool location'. If we get stuck in our old areas just constantly leveling up subs while waiting a week just to see our surplus gone, then whats the point of having such a detailed world when they cockblock us from even experiencing it when we feel like it?
Maybe they want surplus to be like subjobs, but I think its wrong because people are going to level other classes to use their abilities for their main class with or without surplus , no need to push it on us...
