You can only listen to so many versions of "Black Velvet" before it gets boring. The backstory helps add unnecessary drama to the show.

To be fair, I've sat in front of music judges and performed before, and Randy/Simon/Paula/Fill-Ins aren't judges of musical performance on a technical level, they're judges of star power. A sad, sympathetic story is key to star power.

The thing about Orianthi that stands out in this video is I wonder if she even has fun playing, she constantly seems to focus on looking at the camera while Vai just has fun. Even Chocolate Rain guy above constantly smirks at his awesomeness.
