    The live demo

Basically he boots Linux on the Slim PS3 but you can't see it since they had video issues with the PS3, then you see him connect to the PS3 through SSH on the PC, was too lazy to watch the rest.

Not that I don't understand what they're showing there and what it means for the PS3 on the whole, but that was a pretty uninspiring demo. Sure do hope they can get the video working when they release the hack...

All you would've seen with the video working is linux booting/running. Imo, this is just as good because it's right down to the core: ssh to the shell --> a running linux. cat /cpuinfo --> proof of this linux is actually running on the ps3.

What are the chances we get a PS2 emulator for the PS3 out of this? Kind of sad that that is what I want the most from this. >.>

I'm not sure, but I don't think it's too good. Not without a lot of work, anyway. PS3s that don't have backwards compatibility can't just have something flipped and it will suddenly work, because the backward compatibility stuff that was there isn't there.

Now, what I think could happen, is that someone could write or port a PS2 emulator, but who knows how that will go. Time will tell, I suppose, and until then, just emulate it on your computer and turn the graphics up to super freaking high.

Well the Slim PS3 have a ps2emu folder in their firmware containing a few .elf and the PS3 80gb uses a partially software based emulation for PS2 games. Not to mention Sony is apparently planning on releasing PS2 games on the PSN so the possibility is here, be it official "cracked" emulator or a rewrite/port of PS2 emulators.

PSP emulator is a much closer reality though.

Oh, and they found the PSP keys inside the PS3 or something.

The KIRK engine is the crypto engine of the PSP, basically this means the PSP is just as open as the PS3. Math can now sign and encrypt all PSP software. I don't know why Sony was that stupid and hid the KIRK key inside the PS3, but they did and now both systems are opened up.

Sony just got double penetrated. Good luck recovering.

For some reason this amuses me more than it should.

Also, while I doubt Sony is explicitly happy that both consoles are as 'free' as they are, its not like they didn't have a good run. The PS3 has gone almost 4 years without being significantly cracked open. While the PSP hasn't been secure for a long time, it could be said that both systems were pried open because of AntiPiracy measures Sony themselves either implemented or forced on their users.

It could be argued that a driving force for the PSP kerjiggered was to allow games to be played off the memory stick to save battery/load times from the god awful UMD and not Piracy. Reality probably lies somewhere closer to the middle, but look at the response Sony gave gamers in the form of the PSPgo. They kind of admitted the UMD was a bad idea, while at the same time giving the middle finger to anyone who had previously purchased a PSP and wanted to 'upgrade'. "Want to play backups without hacking your system? Buy the god damn games again!" is not a good sales point.
I'm not saying that releasing the GO with the ability to get games off UMD, or even an firmware update to allow games to be played off the memory stick for old PSPs would put the "free game" genie back in the bottle. But it certainly doesn't inspire confidence in Sony's treatment of customers that their focus on Piracy caused them to release a system that is essentially an abortion on launch. They still make PSP-3000's. It has more features and costs less. To me the Go just doesn't make sense. But thats me, and I'm unimportant.

And now the PS3 was hacked by a group saying "we only did this to allow Linux", while stating that they only became interested after the 'OtherOS' option was removed in response to the threat of piracy. Outside of playing backups without a disc or imports, there has been no real reason for a PS3 hack. That makes this funny as hell in my book.

Only Sony knows for sure if the claims that there is no way for this hack to be patched this are valid, but the evidence presented does seem to support that this hack isn't going to be fixed in a week. The PS3 has far fewer issues than the PSP did as a system. The media format makes sense and isn't a detriment to the systems primary function of playing games. The media format also doesn't cause system performance issues (lag).

PSP keys discovered within also? Awesome. Hope it means no more having to go through bloody Patapon 2 to boot up my emulators.

It would take a lot of effort and money to fix this fuckup. The best they could manage is to make it so future PS3s can't use this, but it's not something they can just patch out of the old hardware.

I'm honestly waiting for Aizen level, "You activated my trap card" trolling from Sony at this point. I dunno...given the explanation of what security measures are pointless, useless or just plain insecure I'm still expecting SOMETHING. Maybe its just that they went into such specific detail of how much of a fuck up this was that I don't want to accept that there's not some hidden 'fuck you' switch still built it.

I guess we'll see after January, since right now if anyone could fix this they might be on Vacation.

I hope they can do something. I mean.. it's cool that it got hacked, and it's a big fuck you to Sony, but I just hope that in the long run, this didn't ruin the PS3 for the rest of us who actually enjoy stuff on it.

Consoles have been modded to allow piracy since the PS1, how is this gonna "ruin it" for the rest of us in a way that it hasn't in the past?

PS1 was easily hacked, PS2 was easily hacked, both went on to be massive successes. Although they both required modifications and with this the PS3 won't, it still won't "kill" the PS3 or anything of the sort.
