Glorious. Double Penetrated indeed.
Attention whore he may be, gotta give credit to Geohot, I don't think they would be here without his earlier exploit.

I guess that's a start
If you've been using Jailbreak you know it wasn't possible to boot Tales of Graces, NFS HP, GT5 or any other game compiled with 3.5 SDK, they now work on the 3.41 FW.

Agreed. The percentage of gamers with the aptitude to actually hard mod or even soft mod their systems is pretty slim when you boil it down. Not to mention the larger the investment, the less likely people are to mod their systems out of fear that the system will become unplayable. Modding a PSP I bought for $100 just to mod is one thing, modding a PS3 I've had for 2 years with 15 games is another.
Also as far as I'm aware you've been able to mod the Xbox for awhile now and it's not hurting the success of that console too much - granted they RROD and break all the time to keep sales figures up![]()
I'm just waiting until I can play my ps3 games off the hdd, that and psp games, then I mod my ps3
Another benefit with the PS3 is just how big some of their big name exclusive titles are. There's plenty of games that are just a few GB, but I don't want to deal with 22 GB downloads for shit like Uncharted 2 or 30 GB for MGS4.
HEN still crashes from time to time, and I rarely use sleep mode on the PSP, so every time I want to play a game (or if it crashes) I get to sit a minute waiting to go through the Patapon 2 demo. ;/
On another subject, I wonder what the keys being leaked will say for PS4 being backwards compatible with either PS3/PSP games.
I guess I didn't mean 'ruin it' but Sony's going to want to fix it, and when it seems like the only way they can really fix it is to just move the console on into the death pile, that's what I meant. Then again, that'd be pretty stupid in general, so hey. Who knows.
Also is it a possibility now that they can copy the software emulation coding from the 80gb PS3s and such since they took out the Emotion engine and put that into new systems?
Don't the 80gb PS3s have some of the hardware bits still, with the rest being software? Emulation isn't perfect on it, with about 1 in 10 of my games either having slowdowns not in the original, or some graphical glitches.
As for the subject of PS3 BC for PS4, only way I can see Sony doing it safely is having PSN titles all be re-keyed with whatever new system they employ (while retaining the old downloads for PS3 consoles since they can't work with it), and just flat-out accepting any PS3 BluRay disc under some form of hypervisor to prevent access where it shouldn't be.
(last thing Sony would want is the PS4 being cracked by people with BD-Rs abusing a security problem with the PS3 software)
The PS3 80gb didn't have the Emotion Engine (CPU, handled by the software) but still had the RSX (GPU).
Yep, this. People wishing for a PS2 loader on non backwards compatible PS3's shouldn't get their hopes up. If someone in the homebrew community does make one, chances are it'll run like shit and have very few games compatible with it. The PS3 just can't emulate the speed of the Graphics Synthesizer (not RSX, RSX is the GPU used for PS3.) used in the PS2 which is why it was needed for the 80gb units.
If Sony were looking to bring PS2 games to PSN store, it's unlikely they'll be using any sort of emulation and will probably just be retooled to work on the PS3 SDK very much like how Sony and a few third parties are doing HD remakes of PS2 games. If you want to emulate PS2 games, use a PC. It's better.
The real question I want to know is. Will pirated games have online accessibility like the Wii does. I know with the 360 you can't go online without getting the console ban hammered in 6 months.
Not like it matters, since almost all of the games I want to try before buying first are all single player.
My bad.
Wii is a different deal since there is about 0 security involved in their online. PS3 situation will be closer to that of X360 once the "hacked" firmwares are up to date with Sony servers (since that is about the only requirement to get on PSN), the PS3 won't be able to tell if the game is hacked, similarily to how a X360 cannot tell if a game isn't legit.
Sony could probably check the flash/logs for incoherencies in order to ban people but spoofing shouldn't be too terribly hard once you have complete control over the PS3. Not to mention you could /probably/ change the PS3 unique ID / MAC Address.
So, not to be a typical uninformed gimp looking to bandwagon on some freebie games but when do you think this exploit will be a full single exploit that is run off a memory stick to hack your console easily, much like how the PSP is?
kakarotoks released a script which downloads ofw and turns it into cfw already, but it requires a tool which seems to be broken atm. once that fully works, cfw (and malicious brick stuff) will spree like bushfires. kakarotoks himself said, that he'll release a cfw once he's absolutly sure it won't brick your console.
i give it a week until we get a decent cfw which includes a 3.55 spoof and a .pkg installer. a month until a rebuild backup manager which works with iso's is available. my crystall ball never lies.
//edit: actually now that games can be signed, a firmware spoof isn't even required, right? some skilled coder just needs to download the latest firmware, decrypt it, apply a .pkg installer and sign it again. retail box's will accept the cfw to update and bam!, you have an up-to-date firmware which allows you to install .pkg tools (homebrew, backup managers, ftp etc.). as long as these are also signed, ps3 will execute them.
btw, i'm very amused about how sony hides the psp crypto keys inside the ps3 and mathieulh discovered them when he was looking inside the ps3 with geohot's root key. HEN for newest psp v6.35 came out yesterday![]()
