Unless you mean he's good at doing only 13% of the "real work" and jacking the rest from other developers/coders, & script kiddies abroad (Chronic Dev/Limera1n). He's garbage compared to many other gentlemen in the field.

I don't understand the hater neither. This isn't about Geohot, this is about Sony telling every single customer (you) that you aren't allowed to do whatever you want with your own property. Additionally, they can remove features which you've bought it with. Imagine you buy a car with air conditioning and after a recall, it's removed. God bless, you can still open the windows, right?

This case is important because if Geo wins, it will set an important precedent for any upcoming case which might even involve a more "likeable" guy than Geo.

edit: wutangrza (a cfw dev) covered it pretty good here

Do you think the CFW you are using just fell from the sky? It didn't. Fail0verflow released their tools, Geohot got the metldr key, countless people compiled all the other keys, flukes1 posted some offsets on his blog along with what values needed to be changed, I followed flukes1's blog to allow peek/poke, Kmeaw took my lv1 and lv2 and added the ability to install unsigned pkg's, and myriad other devs contributed to increase the collective knowledge on the console along the way.

At each step, all of us did not feel like we were doing anything malicious or illegal. We were simply looking to modify the console we owned to get it to do what we wanted. You, the end user, benefited from this collective work.

If the precedent is set that we do not actually own the hardware we've bought, then each dev in that series of events will never release any of their work since it will mean being sued into oblivion by the hardware manufacturer. On the other hand, if the precedent is set that jailbreaking your console is legal just as jailbreaking your phone is, then not only will devs feel safe in their efforts to jailbreak future consoles, but other devs will likely join the scene knowing they can develop homebrew applications without receiving cease & desist letters from Sony followed by lawsuits.

In short, try not to be so short-sighted in the future. The stuff you have doesn't just appear from the scene aether, there are people who work hard to materialize these things, and if geohot loses this case, those hard working people will vanish. There's a reason the PS3 was unhacked for 4 years, and it's not because Sony's security was impeccable, it was because no one smart enough really tried. Imagine in the future if no one bright enough ever tries to jailbreak the next big console because they know it will mean their financial ruin due to lawsuits. This is what is meant when we say, "This is bigger than just geohot, and you should donate to help all of us." This really is a lawsuit against all of us; it's a lawsuit that says you don't actually own the hardware you buy, and we, as a community, need to stand up and fully reject this notion--whether you like geohot or not.

Not the same lol. More like "if you bought a car and then there was a recall to remove the drink holder, what would you do? WHAT WOULD YOU DO!?" Enough about this bitching because they decided to remove some shit that nobody in their right mind would use, shit wasn't even practical. Is it because some bought the PS3 solely w/ that in mind and now don't have the option?

Also, what's w/ are all these supposed precedents? "Oh if Sony wins new precedents will be set," name them. "Oh if the guy wins new precedents will be set," name them. What is it? Oh right, a bunch of doomsday hypothetical scenarios.

so you're saying it's perfectly fine that they do whatever they want with your property as long as your personal situation isn't affected?

also, geo already got enough donations and closed them for now.

Not sure if you're asking for a definition or an example, but w/e I'll give both. In a legal context precedents refer to how previous court rulings can be used to establish a principle used to rule subsequent similar cases.

This is important because if Geohot loses, it will be established that users do not fully own the hardware they purchased. This is a HUGE deal. If I buy something I should own it and be allowed to do whatever I want to it. Sony is trying to change this. If they want to block you from their services or void your warranty that is perfectly fine, but they should NOT be able to legally stop you from messing with your own property.

Using your example, you say it's silly that nobody in their right mind should be upset if a car vendor took your drink holder, and that they have the legal right to do so? I would be PISSED. Most people would be pissed. You probably would be too. If they recalled your drink holder then they would have to replace it with a better one, plain and simple. Do you honestly think otherwise?

I wonder how much Geohot got, from the threads I saw most people seemed to average around $30-50 pp, which is pretty fucking awesome considering how normally internet donations are $5-10 pp.

Instead of the cup holder in a car analogy, I think it would be more appropriate to compare it flashing the CPU in the car so it's not limited to 155mph (as a lot of cars are)

Similar, but completely different. Car modifications are regulated because if they aren't street-safe they can endanger people's lives. Now if they never drove the car outside of a private race track, I would have no problems with these mods. But if they want access to public roads they should comply with whatever laws are in place.

There is no government regulation regarding limiting cars speed to 155mph. It was sort of a gentlemen's agreement between some manufacturers. And there have been cases where car owners who've had their car's CPU flashed and when they brought their car into their local dealer for maintenance, have had their CPU flashed back to stock along with having their warranty voided.

Setting precedents in court is everything in terms of legality. Ever heard of Roe v Wade? Brown v Board of education? I'm not saying that Hotz v Sony is even in the realm of the same magnitude, but it emphasizes the incredible importance this can have on those who actually care.

Sony is being inconsistent with their statements between both cases. One case they claim to have privity with the user (Geohot), and the other they claim not to have privity (the class action suit against them).

Instead of air conditioning in car, or cup holder in car; how about running linux in your car.

What I mean is that people usually have this shitty post-apocalyptic scenarios where we don't own shit and are being ruled by the evil corporations. Sony doesn't give a fuck what you do w/ your PS3, throw that shit out of the window they'll give two shits about it. They don't want you to circumvent the hardware which is basically detrimental to both, Sony and the consumer.

Listen what you do w/ your shit is your godamn business, want to pirate your games knock yourself out. I just don't want to deal w/ fucking cheaters on line that I know for a fact will ruin my experience.

So, lets just stop with trying to put things in perspective. Otherwise Isa is gonna come in here and start cracking skulls.

This is still a huge case of general ownership of your property, that you pay money and even a tax on (sales tax). I bought my PS3 on release for $600, i'd be damned if shelling out that type of money means I have no rights to the product whatsoever, because of a little wording on a PSN agreement page.

What if i purchased the console, and never hooked it up to the internet? I never agreed to any TOS.... so do I finally own the product since I never signed a contract? So how can I go out purchase a console, and actually own a product... but the minute I hook it upto the internet, it is now sony's property and i'm merely leasing it?

According to StingyGamer.com Sony is preparing a sizeable PS3 price drop soon which will coincide with Nintendo's 3DS console release in March followed by a new hack-proof PlayStation 3 console in development.

    To quote:
"My source, who also told me the NGP’s price will be £250 in the UK, stated Sony has been preparing a price drop in the UK for quite some time now and are finally preparing to make said price drop to around £170 when Nintendo’s 3DS console releases in March.

The price drop for the slim PS3 SKUs would mean a staggering price drop from the PS3′s original price will be witnessed; with the recommended retail price being £255.30."
EverythingHQ.com (linked above) also states that Sony is reportedly developing a hack-proof PS3 SKU, to quote:

"The hack-proof SKU will be a slim PlayStation 3 model and will contain a 300GB hard drive as an incentive to purchase the hack-proof system – the price of the SKU will be £186.99, my source informs me.

The scheduled launch is unsure at this time due to Sony seeing if they can win the battle in the courts against the root of all the PS3 hacks – George Hotz.

Sony is essentially trying to get rid of all the old SKUs with these price drops – and even their own price drop incoming possibly – so it makes way for their new hack-proof model."
    http://www.ps3news.com/PlayStation-3...sole-incoming/
    http://stingygamer.com/deals/2011/02...-3-price-drop/
    http://everythinghq.com/2011/02/sony...proof-ps3-sku/

If the rumor holds true about the unhackable PS3, then Sony really hasn't learned from their last challenge claiming that the current PS3 was unhackable.

N64 Emulator on PS3 Alpha First Look

We are a team of 3 guys who have been working on a Nintendo 64 emulator for quite some time now, and we have decided to go out with the news since now our N64 emulator is officially working on the PS3.

We still have a huge load of things to work on, but it's playable and N64 is finally working on the PS3.

What we have done so far:

    * 1 player (keyboard only)
    * We have succeeded to enable gameshark codes
    * Graphics works excellent on most games we have tried; Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64, Ridge Racer 64, Diddy Kong Racer, Mario Kart 64, Banjo Kazooie and 1080 Snowboard.
    * Games we have tried that are jerky (so far): Duke Nukem 64, Doom 64, Hexen 64 and WCW Smackdown 64.

    Issues (we are working on):

    * Audio is not working yet.
    * A user interface and the ability to edit and change files such as controller settings, cheat codes, etc. (We do all this over FTP now).
    * Game menu (we now have to upload one game at the time).
    * PS3 controller, (we now have to use a USB keyboard).
    * Multiplayer.

We have decided to use ps3news and youtube to communicate with you guys, and if you want to help us out, feel free to either email us at [email protected] or PM us on youtube.

We will upload videos for every new feature or issue we fix, so please subscribe to us on youtube. We want to keep you guys updated so you can follow our process.

karma's a bitch, sony gets sued by the same charge as they go with against geo: http://psx-scene.com/forums/f6/other...-charge-81569/

the n64 thing smells very fishy, like someone is in desperate need for tube hits.
