Dtoid is reporting that Geohot has fled to somewhere in South America.

Sony claims that PS3 hacker George "Geohot" Hotz has fled the United States in an effort to escape his participation in the notorious PS3 jailbreak suit.

A document filed by Sony alleges that Hotz is currently residing in South America, using his new location as an excuse for not handing his impounded hard-drives over to the publisher for a thorough scouring. Sony adds that "attempts to dodge this Court’s authority raise very serious questions."

To further demolish Geohot's case, Sony claims that he lied about owning a PlayStation Network card. After tracking the serial number one of Hotz's four PS3s, Sony was able to determine that he'd created the PSN account "blickmaniac."

GeoHot's South American move can be seen as one of two things -- a nervous retreat that's a far cry from his confident rapping persona, or a cocky "F-You" maneuver that will confound his enemies and impress his friends. Whichever side of the fence you're on, let's agree on one thing -- that Geohot should bring me back a toucan.

what do you people suggest I look into if I wished to jailbreak this thing. I mainly use it for blue ray since I bought it, but I have several games I hardly play these days.

Factually, it's true I'm in South America, on a vacation I've had planned and paid for since November. I mean, it is Spring break; hacking isn't my life. Rest assured that not a dime of legal defense money would ever go toward something like this. And of course Townsend loves the idea of painting me as an international fugitive. I have been in contact with my lawyers almost every day; I would not let the case suffer. That said, I also won't let this ridiculous lawsuit run my life either. Then the fearmongerers win.

I will be back, I hear it's hard to come by the Xperia Play down here.

Nothing wrong with it..? Sure, but you're retarded if you don't think a) It's going to annoy the judge (something you don't want to do) and b) cast a shadow of doubt on you.
It's stupid to do that because it isn't always about what is right, it's often about what appears to be right in civil court since unlike in criminal cases there is no 'beyond a reasonable doubt' to work with.


Again, Sony's smart to try to cast a shadow of doubt here, now the guy has to disprove their allegations to save face... giving Sony a leg up. This is how courts work.

It won't do either of those things... the only negative to it in this instance is the fact it's such a public case. Shitty blogs write some bullshit about him "fleeing" the country in an attempt to get website hits for ad revenue and then it spreads around and people actually start to believe it. That might piss the judges off (thinking he's fleeing, that is) but going on vacation would not. This is gonna be an extremely long drawn out case and rarely does he actually need to be (or is) present at... well, anything. I'm not sure why you seem to think it'd make any impact on the case at all or cast him in a negative light.

I didn't read up on it closely enough for that, just saw people commenting that Sony was looking stupid so I figured it had to be them. That would be a power play on their part and I would do it. Not like it takes anything away from Sony and forces Geohot's lawyers to be on the defensive even if it's somewhat easy to disprove.

And yes, it would do both of those things... would and has before. Leaving the country with a court order imposed on you and using that as an excuse not to comply with it? It's not going to annoy the judge, save Hotz needing to make an appearance, and even then, he can have his representation show to a civil suit. It's not a big deal...at all. And why would it cast doubt? He's not fleeing jurisdictional boundaries. It isn't a state/fed case.

I guess the guy's buddies are making a direct attack against Sony and are trying to shut down the PS3 network. Because of this, or because of Sony taking preventive measures, PSN has been randomly down "due to irregular maintenance".
