You can, although I'd recommend Rebug atm. Main point is, that when Sony puts out an update, you only need to install the latest Rebug Toolbox package with the new keys, instead of an entire CFW. As for Backups > 4gb, I have no problem with that from the internal HDD using Rebug CFW and latest Multiman.
A new CFW called ErmaC 4.3 is out. No clue what it offers compared to others.
Aevis~ you should message me on AIM. Rebug confuses the fuck out of me, and i'm in over my head on this shit for some reason. aim = itsvandole
so, somewhat related topic here... is there any way to break the disk encryption on a PS3 hard drive? i wanna recover the save data from my YLOD machine and get it transferred to its replacement, but i don't want to pay to get it reflowed again. seems like that's the only viable option at this point though
i'm trying to play Gundam Extreme VS(managed to find a torrent for the supposedly working REPACK), i finally got rebug 4.11 installed and got the latest mulitman but when i try to run it i get an error code.

only lists that it's a large game. bleh. time to debug
edit: do you think this is a game that can't run diskless? i have a broken bluray
nope. guessing that's a non-starter for a busted system, eh?
Unless you've already taken steps to allow you to do so, before it died, there's no way to decrypt the hdd without booting the system.
Has there been anything big happening to the PS3 pirating? I remember jailbreaking mine when it first came out, then buying True Blue whenever it was released. I haven't been keeping up with the development. Is there anything I should know? Is TB still the best?
There's 4.3 cfw now.
Doesn't matter
You need to be on 3.55 to go into custom firmwares. 4.3 CFW does not translate to 4.3 OFW --> 4.3 CFW.
You can use hardware downgraders (most don't require any soldering, but some do) to downgrade your fw if you're on ofw, but you can only go as far down as your ps3's initial cfw. For example, if you bought a ps3 that came with 3.7 (idk if that's even a real fw number, just making it up), the lowest you can go is 3.7, and you're fucked until there's keys or something released for higher fw.
So stuff like this won't work?

PS i don't kno wht my lowest FW was but i know i had 3.55 once
There's actually a way to install cfw on some ps3s that came with >3.55 ofw, using a flasher.

Does anyone have a reliable guide on moving from 3.55 cfw to whatever the most recent cfw is? Is there something like kmeaw that most have settled on or are there multiple firmwares to choose from? I would've done this earlier, but saw a story about the initial release causing bricks and decided to put it off for a few weeks. Searched around, just haven't found anything solid yet.
Just install it like any other firmware. Rebug and rogero's cfw are both good.
Do either allow for or are better for using PSN? Is that a bad idea? Haven't kept up with this or if anyone's getting caught, just saw that people are using them online.
PSN can be used on any cfw, as far as i know.
