I have a very huge (1500x1500) generated map running on my server... Its pretty epic.

If anyone wants to check it out the server will be up in around 30 mins just have to put some finishing touches on it

I'm pretty new at this, as I finally caved (pun intended) and bought it. If I were to dig down near the coast and accidentally broke through to the ocean, would that pretty much flood my cave and drown me?

Probably won't drown you immediately and even then you can swim up. When you dig into water just switch to some cobblestone and plug it up real quick. You'll have time to react and the water will disappear after you stop the 'source'.

water can't flow upward from the source, and can only flow like 4 bricks horizontally at which point it stops unless it drops down a brick, in which case it repeats. So if you break through to the ocean it'll only be a slow flow of water out of 1 tile that you can easily block up quickly. cutting off the source of a water flow will dry up any water that's flowed in already too.

Water dynamics are really weird. If you had a cavern and one block of water broke through, you'd have a little spring pouring in... but it's self limiting. If you kept opening holes it would eventually fill up.

My test drive of my water-based mine shaft elevator almost worked. 2x2 isn't enough space for the boat, as it turns out, as it will drift into the surrounding rock and begin to crush you up against it. Probably have to try again with 3x3 or 4x4 shaft diameters so I can actually react to slight drifts and not die 3-4 times on the way up. Pretty fun though, all I need to do to enter my 75-depth mine is jump into a 3-deep pool at the bottom holding a boat, then plop the boat into the pool by my elevator and swim into it to exit. Quick rides either way, bugs notwithstanding.

I just smash it, not hard to keep a chest/workbench at the top of the elevator with a lot of extra wood around.
