I have found myself restarting a lot. I guess I should learn the items needed to make random things or be able to recognize things. Is it a smart thing to just start digging through a mountain?
I usually restart until my spawn point is next to a decent-sized mountain or decidedly awesome landmass that I can gut-out and eventually turn into a stone fortress.
Then, the typical course of action on day-1 is:
1) Harvest logs from nearby trees.
2) Craft logs into wood.
3) Craft 4 pieces of wood into a workbench and place it where your shelter will be.
4) Craft some wood into sticks.
5) Craft wood+sticks into wooden pickaxes/shovels/swords by using your workbench.
6) Build a safe shelter by either digging a small cave into a mountainside with a pickaxe or building a simple shack out of wood/dirt.
7) If you still have daylight, search out some coal (stone with black specks in it) and harvest that with a pickaxe.
8) Craft sticks+coal into torches to illuminate the inside and outside of your shelter to keep shit from spawning close-by.
9) Use cobblestone instead of wood to craft stronger tools/weapons.
9) Play it safe until daylight and keep your workspace/caves well-illuminated.
10) ???
11) Reign supreme over your dominion with weapons and armor made from diamonds from a massive, obsidian castle.

Sounds awesome then! Thanks a ton btw. I reallllly wanna play on the BG server and do something crazy, but I just don't know what yet.
Have you guys seen the guy that build his own subway station to connect his and his friends zones on their server? Like you can choose which stop to take....
You won't want to start simply carving out the inside of a mountain until you have a small temporary shelter and a lot of torches.
Nowadays on a fresh map I spend my first day getting just enough wood/coal to make a workbench, ~50 ladder segments and as many torches as the available coal allows and dig straight down until I hit bedrock, illuminating as I go down and plonking down my workbench to create stone tools, coming up on the 2nd day to get enough wood to keep making stone tools for when I hit iron. After that it's a matter of what I want to build topside and getting my buckets in order for my waterfall elevator.
Waterfall elevator? That one thing a few pages back people were like O_o at?
If you find yourself stuck without shelter come nightfall, and need an emergency shelter, you can look down, jump, and place a block to create one under you. Do this 3 or 4 times and nothing can reach you but arrows. 10 or so should protect you from arrows as well. Remember, though, don't JUMP down... break the blocks beneath you.
I kinda got bored with survival mode for that reason- its pretty damn easy to avoid the monsters at night, and kinda got annoying after a while. The innovation and fun of avoiding them kinda goes away when you realize you can avoid everything bad and horrible in the world by just digging three blocks down and replacing one above you for five minutes (extra points for using glass so you know when its safe to go upstairs!)
Nowadays I just stripmine for hours and build all the cool shit I can think of
So like I joined and stuff. Turns out I kept 20 bucks in my old bank account just in case I had any small purchases when I switched over to my new bank account, so woohoo for me
I just wish he'd sell the game via Steam, would make it easier for me. ;/
Does everyone spawn at the same spawn point? i.e. when I join in, I end up at the center of the universe?
Also... tree farms! Need some renewable resources here.
How long does it take? I've been logging and replanting so I don't ruin the landscape, since I haven't yet made my way out to newly generated terrain. It's been a couple day cycles and the saplings are still in the ground, plenty of room above them in direct sunlight, pretty much where they were when I chopped the original tree down.
I'll probably collect as much materials as possible without disturbing the landscape, then make some underwater lair or something near the spawn point so I don't have to be 10 billion miles away from the center.
So I know to bring up the chat thing is T, but does anyone on the server actually talk?!?! I can't seem to see a log.
Playing single player and got killed...the ENTIRE game restarts if you die?! Jesus christ cmon...
Screen freezes and goes black like once every 5 minutes and I Have to restart. Any advice?
