My trees have started popping up finally.. no one will ever know I was there! Now to discretely mine some stone and coal...

As for finding your way back, just look for landmarks. Next time, find the highest point near your home and build something big with lots of torches so you can see it from a distance.

That's why you don't start putting work in until you generate a landscape that puts your spawn point near something decent enough to create a shelter/mine out of. Hopefully we'll eventually get some sort of craftable flag or something that lets us set our own home point.

If you don't want to re-start, I'd recommend getting to the highest point you can at nighttime and hope you can see your torches in the distance. (doh' this was already said)

Is there any way to fill a rather large pool with still water? I have a spring leaking out the back of my fortress, so I rerouted it with aqueducts over to this empty pool I have a bridge going over (used to be a gravel pit), but obviously it just spills into it and spreads/drains. I was hoping I could maybe bring the water level up a bit with the use of buckets or something...?

If it's a square pool...

Put source buckets like so:

The water will naturally make the entire lake into water sources.

Ooh thanks, I'll have to do that when I get some patience for it. Also, what use are the little green slime bubbles that Slimes drop? I've never even heard of their existance before.

edit: I guess I read somewhere that they have no use yet... bummer.

Well, I've figured out tree planting alright. I've got a bit of a grove going on around my place. It's in some natural ground depression at the center of a circle of trees near the giant ALLEYA and within sight of some big tower with fire on top, and on the other side, some tower at the intersection of a sky bridge with giant... leg... things sticking out. But hell if I remember how to get there if I have to go from /home again.

Sounds like you're kind of over by me. If you can see two tall boring towers, that's my area. The tower with fire on top is probably dottedquads place. As soon as you can make a compass, then you won't get as lost.

When I'm working on the struts/rafters/supports/whatever way up above the rest of the structure I get a feeling of vertigo, lol. Also, my neck is kinda sore from looking up so much. >_>

EDIT: See the clouds? Yeah they suck. I yell at them or move to a different floor when they invade what I am trying to work on. :s

that seems awesome but my problem with house construction is that I can only make so many rooms with workbenches/furnaces/jukeboxes/bookshelves. I really hope they add more furnishings later.

All I know is I'm behind the big ALLEYA. However, I ended up extending the skybridge from Mister Jingle's tower (was formerly a 3-way intersection, is now a 4-way intersection) toward my place, with a tunnel that takes you from the bridge to my area.

Building fortresses out of a natural land mass is so much more fun and cool looking than artificial cobblestone towers. I still need to screenshot my aqueduct that leads to my backyard pond, with a bridge over it that leads to my local natural cave/mine.
About the bottom 1/3 of my fortress was initially underground. I've gone through so many goddamn shovels. Come Halloween when all my torches burn out, I am going to have one massive haunted house on my hands. I don't know what I'm going to do.

Also, lol? Is this normal? There were like 3 more giant slimes back around the corner in there as well as a skeleton... and they were all stuck. I really wish I had TNT at the time.

Question: I read that a log with something blocking all 4 sides of it will burn infinitely. Can its 4 sides be blocked by other logs? I want to make a huge lighthouse on a nearby mountain that's near the ocean and I'm trying to brainstorm how to keep enough fire burning without it looking stupid. I think my zone is turning into Helms Deep.
