In survival I use only Stone tools until I find deposits of materials which I use steel on. Its not worth it to waste all the steel you find just so that you can replenish your steel. And stone is EVERYWHERE. Diamond tools are incredible though, they seem to last forever.

Are you guys playing the Minecraft Classic version, or are you playing the newest version? If so, did you pay for it? What are the main differences between the two?

It sounds like most are playing the alpha. I've not played classic, but from my understanding classic is merely a lego simulator of sorts. I alpha's Survival mode you've got a day night cycle. Monsters spawn at night and you need to find cover. You also can (and must) craft items. I didn't really get the whole Minecraft thing, but tried it on the free weekend a few weeks back and could not wait for the servers to come back up so that I could buy it. It's probably the best bang for my buck in gaming this entire year.

It looks like shit from the outside, but once you're in it it's holy shit addictive and a lot more scary and atmospheric than you might expect.

Having a blast playing this game so far, but so far it's getting extremely frustrating running out of coal and having to run 30 miles for more. Don't much care to reload-scum my way to a starting point near obvious, plentiful coal deposits, and I HATE wrecking my better tools through tons of stone and not finding anything. I think I just have bad luck with starter maps, and I lose patience using stone tools.
I haven't had that problem too much since the first map I started. I honestly rarely use my Iron for tools since I want it for other things. Stone is fine for me until I have diamond variants. As long as I'm mining regularly at night I have more coal that I know what to do with pretty early on in the game without really leaving my home base.

Just started playing the alpha last night and wow this game rocks. I didn't have a clue to what to do at first, but I watched this youtube video on the basics just to get started and I'm having a blast. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylVtj-1Ccgg

He breaks the first night down such as how to gather and how to craft. I didn't watch more than that first video and now I'm kind of figuring things out as I go. There are tons of stuff to craft like swords and shovels. My first little house is like a underground hobbit hole in a mountain. The very first night is awesome because you don't have a clue what to do and you can hear monsters running around outside. I didn't finish my little cave dwelling in time so I just blocked myself off and sat in darkness for 10 minutes until the sun came back out. Then I managed to fall into a waterfall and I had to mine my way back up before it got dark. This game is awesome, shitty graphics and all.

how deep do you have to go before you start getting diamond (and gold, I guess)? I tried to go down in a diagonal and I stumbled across this twisting underground area with monsters and treasure chests, and every time I start digging down I come across another dropoff of pit or whatever.

diamond only appears up to like the 16 level from the bottom, I think gold goes up to level 32? not positive, but it's pretty plentiful down deep for the amount of uses it has

Remember you need iron picks to get anything from gold/diamond/redstone

I went ahead and paid for the game because its only like $13 or something like that and I've gotten more than my moneys worth so far. Playing on a server with a lot of people is really fun. There is no threat of death or anything so the whole "game" aspect is kind of gone but its really cool seeing the kind of things that people build. I generally play on peaceful or easy when I play the actual game because I find a lot of the zombies and things to be more annoying when I'm trying to accomplish things during the night.

I agree, this game shouldnt be as addictive as it is. I got really hooked on this Xbox Indie (costs 1 dollar) called miner dig deep, which was basically minecraft but sidescrolling with all mining, and you sell the ores to buy better gear. Doesn't have the creation/lego aspects of Minecraft but apparently this type of thing appeals to me cuz I put lots of time into both already.

I *Really* hope the Beta has elevators, or at least some sort of platform that moves along ladders or something.

Does anyone know what kinda stuff they have planned for the future? I read somewhere about possibly adding alchemy, seems like they could definitely have a winner if they expanded the crafting system and added ways to get around faster.

I would settle for rollerskates and the ability to dye cloth for wall decorations like tapestries. A castle with just paintings and bookshelves is a little unsatisfying.

I'd settle for any kind of system to be able to move faster, personally. Mine carts are such a disappointment.

I fell into lava and couldnt find my gear. Lost about 5 diamonds and 8 gold, and a diamond pickaxe, and a stack of coal. Oh well

I would also like to see more furniture/decoration blocks. I can only build so many rooms to build shit in or store shit lol

That's your fault for using rollercoasters for mining purposes.

Man, after exploring my first real cave and finding some diamond deep down I died to a stupid skeleton..
So now I'm on a mission to find and recover the dropped goods, used a good amount of my iron to make full set of iron armor.. then I die to lava D:

On a different world (that got deleted) I built such a big castle (I had a metric shit ton of cobble stone). One of the towers was so tall it was above the clouds, then the game wouldnt let me build up anymore.

I don't know why this game is so addicting though. I woke up today and started playing and all I've had to eat is a cup of tea >.>
