I didn't realize the free-week version of Minecraft still worked, so I redownloaded the exe and have been playing offline mode for the pass couple hours.

Starting to wish I didn't now. Been playing non-stop for the past couple hours after I spent some time learning the basics of crafting so I could actually do shit. Currently working on an underground tunnel in my fort (which is on a tiny island filled with pigs >.>) to a neighbour island. Water is being a pain though, and I don't feel like digging deeper, so it looks like I get to do some swimming shortly to provide a provide ceiling so I can continue building it.

Going to have to buy this very soon, I want those biomes. >.>

Does anyone know the details about how much space a sapling needs to grow (horizontally and vertically)? Also, can a sapling you plant eventually grow into the massive, branching trees you see naturally generated in a world?

Ah, thanks, I noticed the Sapling article on Minepedia, but didn't think to look up Trees themselves. Derp.

The beginnings of my sweet tundra tree fort. I might eventually need a basement as I don't feel comfortable putting a bunch of stone furnaces up in the tree canopies.

First time trying to grow trees inside, planted all the saplings at once, and only 1 tree (and a mega tree at that o___O) grew. As you can see from the screenshot there is sunlight coming down... but is there just not enough sunlight for the rest of the saplings or something?

i think when you plant a sapling, it has a preset size it wants to grow into and if you have anything blocking it, it will not grow. just replant them and eventually they will random out into a shape that will allow them to grow there

ok, here is an issue my friend and I are running into:

I started a new singleplayer, got myself all setup, found a nice corner to hollow out, indoor pool blah blah. Every time I exit my house in the morning, its raining spiders and creepers, its like they are waiting for me, usually 1-2 spiders and 3-4 creepers. of course recently Ive had zombies spawning inside my house, no idea why, I just walk inside, start hollowing out another area, zombie attack. Its bad for my heart.

Now my friend, they have an entirely different and terrifying issue. In the mine at the bottom of their house, never fails, at least 4-6 creepers along with skeletons will just spawn down there. As far as I can tell there is absolutely no openings in either of our places, things just keep getting worse and worse.

What gives? I never had this problem in my previous save at all

In the most recent update, Notch made it so that monsters need less light to spawn the farther down you go. He already said he's going to change it back, so we'll just have to wait for the next update.

As for your problem, monster spawn rates were increased. I would just throw a ton of torches outside of your house, surrounded by a fence. Monsters won't be able to jump over them. Also, cover your house in torches. Remember that monsters won't spawn in light.

how severely do forest fires affect server performance? my friends has been broken for the past couple days and I just came across a few hundred trees on fire, trying to put them out but its a slow process

I discovered the hard way to always bring an extra pick if you're going into a new Nether portal. I broke my pick gathering hellstone, went back through the portal, and landed in an entirely new cavern that I've never seen... which is completely sealed, and I have no pick. Gonna have to punch my way out, and I have no idea how deep this portal put me... I saw a gold deposit, though. Joy.

I just started yesterday and already got in the habit of having four of each tool handy (3 in reserve, one equipped). I'm guessing not everyone does that?

Perhaps it's because I'm working with cobblestone tools and the shit durability kinda demands it.

considering the bug for the server fuckup is related to light and how it is cast from sources, I would say a hundred trees on fire is going to fuck things up REALLY bad.

I'm assuming you placed your portal up against a wall?
