GPS device map updates

Ok so, I know awhile back there was a pretty lengthy discussion about the types of GPS devices that people used and what they did to update their device maps. I for the life of me can't find that thread here or in the tech section.

Anyway my family has like 4 Garmin Devices, 2 newer Nuvi models and a couple of older models and the prices to update the maps via the garmin website are pretty absurd. So my question is, where can the same quality maps be found to update the device without being forced to pay 50 bucks for each device my family owns? I know in that previous thread there were a couple of websites mentioned that either had guides or there were suggestions made where to get updated maps. Hoping that there is someone who knows what thread I'm talking about or has any suggestions to help. Thanks in advance.

edit: Wait, nevermind... thought they used MapShare (which allows you to trade maps).

Yeah they have Mapshare, but they also have some other purchases for better coverage.
