What kind of router is it?

When wired into to it connect to the default gateway (linksys usually is 192.168.1.1). If your dad hasn't changed the default web gui passwords it's usually (Name: admin Pass: admin , or name: admin pass: "nothing"). After you get in, change the wireless pass to something your dad can remember.

I think there's other ways to get in if your dad changed the default web gui passwords. Hold reset for 30, continuing to hold reset pull the power for 30 sec, stilling reset plug power back in for 30 sec. That resets defaults in linksys routers i think.

ok i typed in the ip address and for some reason the password would not stick i would enter it and apply it but then when i entered it on my comp. to get on the net it wouldnt work so i just had to set it to no password thats the only way besides hardwired i wanted to keep a password on there cause they have some bum neighbors that steal the net theat y the password was there in the first place. i guess ill just turn it off when i come over then turn it back on when i leave

    Wait so, what?

Are you trying to 'password' your router with an encryption key? You've bounced between two totally different things. Are you trying to change the password for the actual router configuration interface or do you want a 'password' to secure the wireless connection?

The password to enter the web interface for the router and the wireless key can be and are normally different.

Try 192.168.2.1 in the address bar. If you don't get anything, do the next few steps. If you do get something, skip this.

    1. go to start → run → type cmd [Or if you have vista or windows 7, hit start then type cmd]
    2. type: ipconfig /all
    3. scroll up until you see "default gateway"
    4. go to a browser and type that ip address in the address bar

Now you should be at your router setup page. There should be an option for "Security" somewhere.

Click it and go to the drop-down and select something like WPA-PSK and then type in an encrpytion key. Click save, restart router, ???, profit.

Sorry for the confusion... I want to make a password to protect the wireless signal because they have neighbors that like to try to steal it. For some reason when I put a password in to protect it then I try to access it, it wont work the password wont take and it wont let me connect. So I just dropped the password and opened it for when I'm there and then lock it out again when I leave. Hope this clears some stuff up Ill try some of the new stuff you guys suggested thanks for the info.
