Alright, since there's a million check my pc build threads, I've narrowed it down to what I'm going to be grabbing. However, I'm unsure if I should stick with my friends suggested EVGA Mobo/460 combo or go with my other preferred build. Optimally, this will be a build that's near 1k.

Case is still undetermined, taking suggestions.

Any suggestions or changes that should be made to get better bang for buck, trying to get the whole system under 1k before rebates. I'm also open to using ATI cards as well.

EDIT: If you can build an AMD based system with similar performance for cheaper, post it up. I'm just looking for something to run FF14 reliably, and most releases on steam. My current setup with my MBP is pretty lacking.

Motherboard is fine, that's actually a good price for an EVGA, I assume it's on sale and the rebate is nice too, I got a shittier board for more $ than that just 3-4 weeks ago. I see no problems. That ram kit is pretty much the best bang/buck. You could go slightly cheaper with the GTX460 however, the Gigabyte version is $10 less and has a better fan/heatsink, cooler and more quiet, can push it further with OC. But evga has lifetime warranty and better support, so if that's worth $10 to you that's fine.

I'm pretty much thinking its going to be a single card build for the next year or so, and by then its going to be new board/CPU time.

Anyone have any suggestions on cases? I was looking at the antec 900, but was wondering if the 300 was any good?

Spend the extra $50-70 and get the GTX470. The increased DX11 performance and VRAM will suit you better in a single card setup and be more futureproof than the GTX460.

There is no such thing as future proofing, when you're ready to upgrade to say, the 500 series in the next generation of cards, just ebay your GTX460 and use the funds to upgrade.

As for case, I like the HAF 922, it's a bit cheaper and comes with 200mm fans, I like bigger fans, they push more air for less RPM.

Edit - You should actually be able to SLI two 460's with that PSU, 650w is fine, people always recommend more because they assume the worst of the PSU, if it's a piece of shit PSU then yeah get 850w or something, if it's quality like corsair 650w will work.

Why is the MicroCenter i7 930 so much cheaper than the Newegg?

I mean its $90 less...

I'm going to be building a computer in about a month or two, and am wondering if i should buy the MicroCenter one now if that price wont last?

I wondered that myself. Most of their stuff is priced normally, seems like a strategy to draw people in with certain very low price items, get their name out, and their normal prices are competitive so people may end up buying other components.

Upgrade the Hard drive to a WD caviar black 1tb if you can spring the extra like 30 bucks.

Cases... anything will do but for a budget case id snag a HAF 922(really good case) for like 90 bucks or you could get some serious quality with a Corsair 700D(even better) for 200 before rebates.

I read somewhere they are gonna drop prices on a lot of the Intel chips at end of month. I am skeptical but I am waiting until then before I make the 90 minute drive to the Santa Clara MC and pick up my 930. Might pick up two and try and recoup my gas money lol...

Well, in large part it's just a matter of being somewhat confortable working on computers in general. If you've done reformats, hardware upgrades, and so on...building is only a little more involved than doing all that at the same time.

While this article is slightly dated, it does give a decent idea of the process of actually putting a pile of parts together.

Hardware selection tends to be similar to retail product selection in plenty of other arenas. Pros/cons, quality, cost-effectiveness, and so on. The market tends to move pretty fast, so a lot of this just comes down to scouring hardware sites n' forums for reviews and info. Kind of depends on the considerations you mean too.
