Just had a comp tech (not a craigslist guy) come over and install a new PSU (1250watt) to support the 2nd gtx 480 I just bought. He also moved everything into a new case. But now, double - triple checked that everything is properly installed, it turns on for about 1 sec and then turns off. We are trying to figure out what's wrong. I bought a sparkle 1250 watt psu, top of the line, so I rly hope it's not DoA.
Any suggestions would be great... If it was DoA I'd think it would even start up at all... So unsure.

Gonna put $50 bucks on the motherboard is not mounted properly in the case and that it's coming in contact with the case itself. Take it out and place it on an anti-static sleeve (should have come with your motherboard) and test it again. Could be not aligned with the screw holes that you mount the motherboard on.

He took out a gtx480 and put in the old psu and it worked.... Lame

What the flying fuck do you need a 1250watt psu for, lol? 800 would have been more than enough for whatever youre running.
And yes, the key to checking what is wrong with new parts, is to plug in the old ones and see if it works. All this shit is plug and play anymore, no need to configure anything, just plug it in and if it works it works, if not, it's toast.

For SLI 480s? Definitely need more than 800.

Was reading http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/...buying_guide/1 and seemed 800 was fine for even SLI.
600 is min http://www.nvidia.com/object/product...tx_480_us.html but I think 600 is too low, id feel safe at 800, any more than 1k is overkill.

The problem was he installed a Sparkle PSU. Have him install a Corsair 1000W.

even though its probably fine and you shitty wiring at home can't handle the draw from 1250watts.

There was a list I found once of all the power supply factories in Asia and which brands they corresponded to.. it was probably the single best resource for determining the true origin of a particular unit.

As for quality, it's best to read the testing articles that HWS, Anandtech or Tom's does. They're pretty thorough with their testing, from literally breaking down a unit into components to verifying the power output at different load levels.

It's not that I needed a 1250watt for SLI, its that I was thinking about future proof PSU's... and I'd most likely never need to think about a new PSU again if i got one this powerful. But yeah, thinking about a corsair 1200 now since its a little cheaper... and a better known brand
