16:10 (1920*1200) was the standard for PC widescreen until manufacturers realized they could make more profit by just slapping TV panels into their monitors and advertising "Full HD" 1920*1080 as standard. You lose 120 vertical lines and gain absolutely nothing whatsoever. Mostly the term "Full HD" just pisses me off because it's a meaningless consumer-electronics buzzword printed on golden stickers and targetted at the same fucktards who buy Monster Cables and 3D goggles, and it's getting harder and harder to find real PC monitors for a reasonable nowadays since everyone has switched to only manufacturing TV screens.

Apple's displays are IPS though, if you compare them with other IPS displays from NEC or other brands the pricehike isn't that bad. The cheapo TN panels can't really compare. The rest is pretty bang on though. ;p

In fairness though, many OEMs overcharge for parts/upgrades.

For example, going to the Dell page today and configuring a Precision Workstation T7500 - cost to go to 2.26Ghz Xeons over the base 2Ghz ones is $300. Going to 2.66Ghz Quad-Core Xeons is $2050. Apple's price differential there is actually -less-.

The Dell comes with 2GB of RAM base instead of 6. Going to 6GB of RAM (a 4GB upgrade remember), is $300. That's more than the $100 for 2GB on Apple's side as well.

How much does Dell charge for a 1TB drive over the base 250GB? Oh. That's right. $345. Still just a 7200rpm SATA drive.

Part of the catch isn't so much that it's Apple, it's that Mac Pros are workstation machines. Xeons, registered memory, all that. They cost a lot from anyone - at times, for certain configs, they can actually be a decent deal. Not the base model, but the dual processor models.
The issue (to me) is more that Apple doesn't offer a middle ground. If I want a tower (or any real internal expansion at all), a Mac Pro is the only option Apple has.

That's the reason why i went with a Samsung T240HD.
Even though it counts as TV it has a 1920x1200 resolution.
