I've been tolerant about a lot of things SE do with FFXIV, and have tried to see their view of it... But this is just stupid. You can't defend this shit. There's no logical reason to punish people for something they pay for. How upset would everyone be if cable companies stated that you can only watch TV for 8 hours a week per channel, and after 8 hours the reception goes bad until it eventually fades out completely? People would be PISSED. That shit would not fly.
That still doesn't make sense because you could get to 0% exp without ever killing anything.

    mind = blown
Physical exp is so stupidly easy to get that doesn't really matter. You have potentially up to 144 hours of class exp among all classes, which gives you 3 hours a day to run around LL and do quests, change gear, and sleep and eat. And that time still doesn't include worthwhile EXP you'd get from a further ~4 hours of exping for each class (90%-50%) which goes beyond the number of hours in a week.

Err... I think there's a bad translation. I don't think that there's a cap on Physical level, I think it's just that it loses the bonus, like Class level, and that's all.

What's the point on capping Physical level every week? SE wants us to play 24/7, not 8-15 hours a week.

I guess I have to apologize for my sloppy translation. Literally it talks about "reaching an amount of EXP we (SE) expect to be reached within 8 hours of playtime" will trigger the decrease. So the actual time you need for this is irrelevant (just, in most cases, it should be around 8 hours). I am very sorry for my sloppiness; I really didn't realize until now.

    @Chonataru
No, the rest is correct. It actually dwindles to 0 after 15 (16) hours' worth of EXP/Skill.

I don't understand how you can treat this as official if there's hardly any real proof about it.
I honestly can't believe their system is the same/worst than speculated and Tanaka raged about it. Not to mention the system doesn't make any sense and it's only up on one of three Beta websites.
As far as I know they've never posted any information on only 1 Beta website for months and this issue is about foreign websites... leaving this info on the Japanese Beta test site is pretty much the worst way to solve the issue.

And to think of how little of a problem this would have been if he had just talked instead of the typical "nod nod wink wink you'll find out when the game launches... maybe~!!" response with a cryptic giggle.

Of course people are going to run with the horns if you only show them frustration in the "test" of the concept, then mention a penalty related to the concept in an interview, and then NOTHING ELSE.

Is Tanaka this dense? You absolutely cannot blame "the media" this time, and him doing so shows that SE absolutely has not learned, once again.

I swear, Enix and Square merging was perfect. I thought Square was getting it in 98, back when Enix was the one that was completely stagnant, but apparently Enix afflicted Square with the "old fashioned" curse that prevents any form of advancement in policies or mindsets. This whole fiasco is Dragon Quest all over again, and even the Japanese gamers are getting pissed at it. This is no longer an "Americans are lazy and want their epix!" issue - quite literally the world is becoming frustrated.

FFXIII already took enough flak, to the point where it costs like 5 bucks in Japan to buy now. Do they really want to ruin this release too?

On one hand, it kind of sucks. But on the other, it doesn't sound horrible if you can find 2 classes you're interested in. Throw in mining and blacksmithing, and you've got about 30+ hours worth of pure exping a week without any surplus.

I doubt SE cares how much we play a week, as we pay per month. If we're hooked on FFXIV and can only play for 8-15 hrs a week, all that does for them is decrease server load.

The factor is *if* we're hooked. As this could stop that.

In the end, it means we have to play for more months to get levels (more money for them) - This effectively recreates XIs slow levelling up system. Its just disguised as when we do EXP, we level up fast, and then cant exp any more.

That's still stupid though, do they adjust it according to your level?

Also, does it reset at a set time like Leves (like, every Sunday for example), or is it a week after your first point of exp? I guess this is SE's way of doing "level cap quests".

I love how even in their explanations they do their best to explain as little as possible. If it's based on a set amount of experience, why don't they tell us how much instead of choosing the most vague description they can think of?

...and while we are at it, let me finish the rest.

    - at the moment, they are investigating possible approaches to make surplus EXP be good for "something". However, they have no concrete idea what this "something" could be.

And for a change, let me speculate a bit:

Do you remember that one question during the beta application where they asked you how many hours you could play per week on average? Might well be the majority of people answered "8-10 hours", eh? Originally, i thought they just wanted to know what people will make good full-time beta testers, but maybe I was mistaken... nicely hidden customer survey, SE ^^/

I surely hope not, as people are unlikely to play a beta for as long as a real retailed game. They didn't ask you how many hours you could play on average, they asked how many hours you intended to play the beta per week on average.

That Sankaku article could be something good for FFXIV if SE readjust the way surpluss works when they realize people are still upset even though they explained it.

Eh, that would be kind of difficult unless they broke it down into percentages of levels or something.

I think we will have to wait for an official explanation for this official explanation.

Turn the NDA back on! Oh wait, cat's out of the bag.

I'm of two minds about this surplus system. I want to see what (if) the official translation says regarding this system. I don't expect SE to explain every nuance of the game to players, because discovery is part of the fun. But, in this case, they need to communicate clearly with their users as too much negative press has resulted from this. I myself, did not encounter too much surplus during beta due to the fact that I was leveling multiple classes. So, as usual, I will chill in the back until I get more information before coming to a conclusion.

This. The less you play per month, they less they have to take out of your monthly payment to keep everyone else running smooth in the server.

A "good" company wants their players playing a lot, but not too much, but remaining a paying customer for years.

A "greedy" company wants their players playing ALL the time, so as to attract more NEW players through their obsession, while obviously paying for years.

A "fucked up" company wants their players hooked, but only playing the bare minimum to stay hooked, so as to save money each month.

I'm not going to accuse SE of being in the third category yet, but this does seem pretty damned suspicious. You design a system based around keeping players from playing not just how they want, but from really playing the game for a fixed amount of time. You want them as paying customers, but not customers that are allowed free use whenever, for as long as they want, with no restrictions.

I just don't know, yet. All I know is that its so easy to fix this situation; TALK ABOUT IT. Spill your fucking guts. Let the players know that what's out there is false, and this is why.

Why is that so hard? What precludes these ignoramuses from tippytappying on their keyboards, releasing a statement on the official site, and going about their day?

Bombur: When have we ever had an official explanation that explained the ins and out of a system within FFXI or FFXIV? Honestly, I cannot remember.

With how equipping abilities/spells works in FFXIV, won't you have to level a bunch of classes to min/max a single one anyway?

Pretty much so. Funny enough, I raged a lot against this system some days ago, hahaha!

I'd think of it more like a subjob system. Some classes you only need specific abilities. So you level one class just high enough to get the skill you need.
