    "Duplicating" suprlus argument

If the evil Gaijin rumors are true about surplus, why don't they just go the smarter route and do what someone on this forum suggested by allowing rested exp? Allows casuals to level faster and doesn't visibly gimp the hardcore. Only contradiction I see stopping this is idea is...

    WOW DOES IT!!

    @Qpoiuwer
    That sounds cool
You already nailed it, Blackheart. SE wants to be different. Too bad SE wants to make money too, and different =/= profit.

On topic: I tried conj. the other day for shits and giggles, and jeeeezhus, I'm absolutely rolling a caster first come open beta. No more acc issues for me!

holy poo poo, post from FFXIVCore:

    "
Btw, there is a new developer's post at the (Japanese) beta tester's site
that explains the whole system in minute detail. Talk about fast reaction ^.^/

Basically it's 8 hours per week @100% Skill increase, then dwindling to 0
in 10% increments during the following 7 hours. However, this is class-specific.
So playing another class will give you a fresh 100% start for that class for 8 hours.

As physical level is shared between classes, however, after 8 hours/week it's
down the road no matter what.

And SE seems pretty adamant about that.

Of course, you CAN play longer without switching classes and you WILL get EXP.
But by playing double the "normal" time for that class (16 hours) will net you
    only 150% of what a 8-hour-player gets.

The only thing SE did wrong was naming this a "fatigue/penalty" system. If they had
stated that "for the first 8 hours every week, you'll get a 100% EXP bonus. Yay!"
everybody would have been happy. Although technically this would be the same thing.
    "
my take - each class has 8 hrs/week of full skillups, then it goes down to 0 over 7 more hrs. Physical lvl same thing with exp.
Everything get reset on the end of week.

Edit: all values should be time when you do stuff - combat or crafting/gathering.
Edit: all this is should be about "bonus" - you start each week with +100% exp, skill and then it goes down... etc..

Great... so in order to level up myself, I need to stop playing.

Or continue playing twice as hard. (>.....>

    Really strange for me.

    1) Its not a PvP game. So the so call "Fairness" needed is not there

    2) Should we be responsible with our own playtime?

I actually don't feel too bad about the fatigue system. It gives me more incentive to focus on other things like crafting, gathering, and secondary sub classes. Also, as a college student i won't feel as bad taking a break to study and what not. :3

I really hope this isn't a HUGE deal breaker for people...I don't want the servers to be ghost towns.

Yea, the system is fail. SE has done this time and time again, though. They made a lot of sweeping changes in FFXI to "stop" RMT and such which caused a lot of players to be hindered as well. Goblins running down the coasts to attack fishing bots etc etc.

    1. You can have "fairness" in PvE games, just because you can't beat other doesn't mean it has to be a cesspool.

    2. I'm pretty sure they just want to try to avoid the shit people COMPLAINED about with XI. Time sinks. And if what the post on the JP tester site is true, a casual player won't even come close to getting 'max surplus' unless they label themselves as casual to have an excuse for using shitty gear/don't know how to play.

Like someone else said, think of the first 8hrs as a bonus to xp gotten. People look down on it because of the wording. I see nothing wrong with it at all if you are only reduced once or does fatigue stack up until you literally get 1% of the xp you would have gotten beforehand? If it just cuts your xp once i'm fine with that.

While I don't agree with it at all, there is something to be said about the verbiage. If it were presented like "rested EXP" or something like that, nobody would care. At this point, I'm actually starting to not care.

The problems with thinking of it as a bonus are

    1) it displays the bonus amount as normal exp, and then over time starts showing you exp you're not getting. It should be the other way around if it's a bonus, showing you the normal amount + the bonus with the bonus slowly going away.

    2) people have been saying it's possible to get to near zero amounts of exp, if it's a bonus and not an increasing penalty then there should be some reasonable normal level of exp that isn't zero.

You will be getting 0% EXP after 8 hours. Enjoy killing mobs for no rewards.

16 hours a week is only a little over 2 hours a day. If "not enough time to play through a raid" isn't casual, I'm not sure what is.

Like someone else said, think of the first 8hrs as a bonus to xp gotten. People look down on it because of the wording. You get normal XP for 8 hours, and then your XP will reach 0 in about another 7 hours.

It's not a bonus and no one is going to see it as a bonus, because absolutely nothing is said about it anywhere. A new player is going to play his first 8 hours and become accustomed to that as his baseline for XP; when he hits surplus, he's going to feel penalized, because he is. Even games with rested experience don't give you rested experience out the door -- they let you experience the baseline and then give you the bonus after you log out, so people perceive it as a bonus.

No...it goes to 0 around ~15 hrs according to SE. Could be much faster, or could be slower. SE approximated what they felt it would take to get to that mystical XP which nets you 0. The XP you earn decreases every hour after 8 hours for each class, and for your physical level is set to ZERO XP @ 15 hours.

There is no bonus here. It is a punitive system. Just because SE named it "Surplus" doesn't imply any sort of bonus whatsoever. I shall name my weak puny cat Mr. T, and henceforth will be seen by people as a huge beefy cat. /sarc

I believe swapping to another class resets the cool down on the penalty. It keeps going for your physical level but that would make sense as they don't want your physical level to drastically out level your skill levels. There are 7 classes of magical/physical I believe so that's 56hrs of 100% xp and another 42~hrs of reduced xp. Not even counting time you may use to craft yourself items to help in your leveling.

The system is kind of meh, but at least it's not stopping you dead after 8hrs and telling you to get off the game completely.

The idea behind it is to make you try out new things that game has to offer instead of taking one class and grinding for a weeks straight with neckbeard and cheesedoodle stained fingers to max level.

They do that and they'd have to make the exp curve longer too.

BRING IT ON SE! I LOVE GRINDING!

    ?

But yes, Lucavi is right. SE doesn't want their game to die after 2 months, nor do they want to punish casuals either.

How do you define 8 hours? what if you stand there for 8 hours and kill 1 monster every 20 mins?

It is if you are only interested in one or two classes. People shouldn't assume that everyone wants to play every class. Not to mention people will get pissed off they are getting zero physical xp. It's generally not a good idea to penalize your playerbase for playing your game, especially a MMO. This can only hurt SE's bottom-line. I only hope it hurts them enought to scrap this entire system.
