Need halp OC'ing my $4200 FFXIV rig

    Hi,

I'm in the process of building a FFXIV supercomputer and I would like to be able to OC the i7 950 CPU as soon as I finish the build. I'd like to get it up to 4.0GHz. I have absolutely 0 experience with OC'ing, and this is actually my first computer build so any information would be much appreciated it. BIOS templates and values would be a great help!

Here are the parts in detail:

    Case: HAF X

    CPU: i7 950

    GPU: x2 480 GTX w/ backplate

    mobo: EVGA X58 FTW3

    RAM: 6GB Corsair Dominator TR3X6G1600C8D

    CPU Cooler: Corsair H70

    PSU: Thermaltake TR2 1200W ATX 80 PLUS

    SSD: OCZ Vertex 2 120GB

HD: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB

    Monitors: x3 Acer 3d monitors

Keyboard & Mouse: Logitech MK 5500

    Headset: Logitech G930

    Thanks!

Hmmm... I thought this sounded familiar.

The link that the first person replied with will be just fine for you I think.

That is such a complicated guide though.. I am looking for a template to follow.. I don't want to end up burning my processor!

Also, I'm more interested in hearing input from FFXIV players =)

Follow this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJOyZ...eature=related, but instead of stopping the target at 3600, go to around 3900 instead.

the go into advanced CPU options and do the following

    CPU Ratio Setting: Auto
    C1E Support: Disabled
    Hardware Prefetcher: Enabled
    Adjacent Cache Line PRefetch: Enabled
    Intel (R) Virtualization Tech: Disabled
    CPU TM Function: Disabled
    Excute Disable Bit: Disabled
    Intel (R) HT Technology: Disabled
    Active Processor Cores: All
    A20M: Enabled
Intel (R) SpeedStep (TM) Tech: Enabled
Intel (R) Turbo Mode Tech: Enabled
Intel (R) C State Tech: Disabled

This should give you a steady overclock of around 4 ghz, mine runs fine and runs at great temperatures. Tweak and change depending on your system and how far you dare to go.

If this still doesn't make sense to you, don't overclock your pc because the chances are you will break it.

What Knyghtmayre said, if you can't follow a complicated guide and understand the mechanics of how your overclock is working maybe you should just stick to stock, or drop some more money and pay someone who knows what they are doing to take time to read for you.

Oh my god I laughed out loud.

How the fuck are you spending 4200 bucks on that shit? Mine cost around 1700 and it OC's to 4.0ghz and is arguably better than yours minus the 3 monitors.

Thanks for the replies. I am gonna go ahead and try OC'ing with the information I got so far.

I am planning to use this PC for other games too, but it's primarily going to be for FFXIV. Imagine porn in Nvidia 3d surround vision?! =P

I guess when you put it that way, porn can be considered a game too.

You better be running 3x 40inch monitors or some shit, that's the only acceptable reason to pay $4k for a pc.

FYI your computer is going to be very very loud, as well as be very very hot. Your room will be 80-85degrees easy.

    ^ same

OP you can't follow some template to overclock, you are going to wreck your processor.

And what the fuck, cheap ass, why no 980x? Pussy.

Lol, thanks for the input everybody. I guess it's hard to explain the urge for having the best stable performance PC on the market. I realize that I could have spent less money for a very similar build, but these parts seem to be highly reviewed and are definitely future proof.

980x would be just be crazy. Paying $1000 for something that I most likely won't utilize is stupid.
Regarding the room temperature.. I have central AC running 24/7. I believe the fans/airflow in the HAF X case should help as well as the Corsair H70. The x2 480 GTX both come with a backplate allowing them to run at least 10 degrees cooler.

I'd rather trade out one of the 480's for the 980x.

Or instead of 2x 480, why not just get one 5970? No idea of the temps on the 5970, but I'm sure it's much less than the 480's...

Edit: From a quick google-fu, I saw 5970 maxing out at 86 degrees, and 480 at 88. 2 of those at near 90 degrees...eh. Unless you need the 2 GPU to support 3 monitors, you'd probably be better off with one 5970 (unless you like playing in a sauna; central air sucks)

Does 5970 support 3d vision? Reason I got x2 480 is that they will allow me to play using Nvidia's 3d Vision and 3d Surround.. also they seem to outperform pretty much everything in every benchmark I've seen.

Do you enjoy getting a headache after an hour of gaming and losing depth perception every time you shift your eyes? It's a gimmick.

Also if you want surround sound, get a good sound card and a good set of cans, all of the "gaming" surround-systems are a joke.
