The only thing that has changed for Mnk is the amount of attention it is getting, and the quality of its weaponskill in abyssea. Likewise, the only thing that has changed for Sam is the amount of attention Mnk is getting, and the quality of its weaponskill w/out Fudo, in comparison to Mnk's.
That being said, those of you who quit Sam because you are too lazy to get Fudo - good - for the rest of you, stop relying on BG to tell you which job is worth your time.
Everyone already knows bg recommends sam with masamune.
That is not the point I was trying to make... and to be fair, bg recommends throwing Mnk, Whm at almost everything - not that I am exempt from this. Many of the new weapon skills are still widely unknown in terms of damage in and outside of abyssea, in comparison to other jobs and so forth.
All I am saying is in order to get everyone off the bandwagon that leads us all to similar conclusions, people actually need to attempt different methods, strategy etc..kind of the point of an endgame forums. Maybe this game is just tiring me idkbro.
e: This is not a preech for snowflakes/individuality/retardism. Common sense is required.
Well one of the more important parts of this game is obtaining gear. I agree with everything you said except that mnk whm duos do give you the freedom to proc blue and still kill in a fast manner all sorts of NMs without having to resort to other people. Defensively I think that beyond JAs/Traits the fact that it pulls ahead 400-600hp from other jobs is really the most defining defensive characteristic. Maybe I'm overstating it, and truthfully I probably am, since almost everything I do is just me and my dbox and 400 hp can be the tab time between life and death sometimes.
Proc'ing red is nice assuredly but it's really only for NMs on timers since you could spam pops of a NM slightly slower than it would take to cycle through all of your Ele WS. I like my nin, it's what I use frequently, it gets a decent number of blue!! procs and a large number of red!! ones. However, more and more I find that I wish I could proc almost all of the blue!!s for a majority of the game content I do. Shit is situational and I guess it really depends on your playstyle/what you're doing, but I think it's kind of silly to try and push down the fact that mnk offers the easiest way to proc blue!!. Personally, I hate asking people to help me with anything so I try to maximize what I can do from what I have. Mnk provides the best (read: easiest, fast, safe) basis for this.
I'm confused, I thought I said mnk is good as a blue whore :/ It's the reason I'm actually bothering gearing my mnk and such. It's amazingly convenient, and I agree with being able to cover that shit with as few people as possible. I use it for any mob I care about blue proc on - but those aren't as common as you're implying, in my personal opinion.
As for the popping more and forcing the KI - of course mnk can do that, but I'm saying even a Drk, which is possible the most neglected/etc job currently in the game will get a KI faster than a mnk on average (Drk/nin can cover 7 red proc WSes). I'm not saying a mnk can't do it, I'm saying a mnk is going to be one of the slowest jobs possible to complete an upper tier popset, on average. Mnk gets 2 WSes naturally, a 3rd if /war.
I dunno about you, but I spend far more time doing things I want a red proc on than blue, and if nothing else, my original point was the overrating of mnk being done (Seems everyone ignores the red proc stuff), so naturally I'm pointing out the things it's missing. It's still a good job, It's obviously hands down the #1 choice for blue proccing anything, but outside of that, it's nothing special and I don't feel is worth mentioning above other DDs. Shit is situational, but as I said, I'm 100% sure no mnk, Vereth included, can kill a lower tier NM as fast as I can on Sam. For that matter, I highly doubt a mnk can beat a war/sam either. Sekkanoki is insanely powerful when you start with TP and are looking at 1 fight with a 3.xmin repop between. Honestly, a Mnk/sam is going to outperform a mnk/x if you just look at these fights.
Anyway, mnk has it's uses, it's definitely a strong job - but it's nothing near what it seems to be made out to be here, it definitely has some drawbacks, and in general I just think people have put it on a pedestal as always the best option, when that's most definitely not the case.
What good is sekkanoki when my WS does twice what yours does? SAM is almost on the same level as DRK. WAR/SAM, sure, but if it comes down to that then why aren't you subbing SAM on mnk? I use it frequently enough, with red curry and stalwarts I cap attack on most shit anyway.. leaving /WAR as only 10 DA. If you're going to bring 2hr boxes into it, I generally kill placeholders near the ??? for whatever mob I'm killing. About 3/4 of the time, if not more, I'll get a 2h box before ??? is back up.. hundred fists, ascetics fury, smite, light sc, side target key box, 300 tp smite, double light.. the rest of hundred fists kills it and my 2hr is back up for the next time a box loads.
Maybe my situation is different since I have a mule with both war and nin and every red WS learned, as well as TH6. If I'm going for popsets, that mule will be on NIN, my main will be on WAR, and my good mule will be WHM or RDM. If not, I'm going to be MNK THF and WHM or RDM. Furthermore, beyond that, it depends which key items you're doing. I'm certainly not going to go WAR to merc smok, for example. If I'm sitting on a dog collar/bat fur/w.e from misc prior runs, I'm not going WAR for a couple popped NMs.. I'll save myself the safety and rape the NM twice so I can head straight to the higher tier afterwards. If I have a pop saved to do a scheduled kill for someone buying drops, I'm going to be on MNK.
MNK is most popular for a reason : it's safest, fastest, and simplest for most things. The exception is key items, but during an extended key item farm you'll probably want more than two people anyway(not to say it can't be done with 2).
Was only a matter of time.....

Huh? You don't average anywhere near twice what I do...also skillchain, also mentioned Sekka as far as a subjob...for main it's Sekka+2hr (like you said, it's up every kill). As for me subbing sam on mnk, all I use it for is blue proccing stuff low-man, rarely use it for anything extended, so I'm generally mnk/nin (which may add to my general personal dislike for the job, I'll admit). As for your scenario on NMs, that's still slower than I kill them, I'm fairly certain (which is really 18-26 secondsish usually if I'm not bothering with red). It is refreshing to know I'm not the only one thinking sam is a viable sub for mnk atm (or nin for that matter). Sekkanoki is -very- strong in Abyssea if the target is lower tier NMs, in my personal opinion.
I don't have any really good parses inside Abyssea, I'm too lazy half the time, but if I had to guess my average is probably around ~2.8-3k inside Abyssea (it's 2.3k in Ein, losing Overwhelms here and there, no Merit/Atma, and no regularly 200TP+ WSes). Not sure what you average, but it sounds like your max is rarely over 2x my average. I can say, without a doubt, my Fudos average higher than my Raging Rushes or Ascetic's Furies. I'm sure you've seen the screenshots people have posted...I've seen one here of Bakka, don't recall what else...we can really kill old NMs with WS>WS>Light (You prob can do this too with /sam), but if they have a bit more HP in newer zones, all it takes is 2hr and repeat this, and they are still dead. Just honestly don't think any other job will ever be able to do that (Can push a good ~20k damage in 20 seconds).
I'm not really arguing for Sam here, as much as I'm making a statement about monk, so your first sentence of this is agreeing with me, not disagreeing. Even with an Empyrean weapon, you are opting to not play monk - that says something about it's usefulness in this situation (as does the fact I'll switch off Sam and go mnk for blue proc vs those NMs). As for the higher tier NM/etc...I generally don't even pop the upper tier NMs without enough people to grellow (blu, blm, brd, and someone /nin with tools...TH is nice too). Generally this makes it not very plausible to truly lowman (2box or 3-4 man) unless you're solo/kiting it. I'd still go notmnk to finish the popset, then sit on it until I can get enough people to get a decent guarantee at 3-4 +2 items as opposed to 1-2. I don't see a point in rushing through using pops and spending twice as long ingame to get the same # of drops because I'm impatient. I also don't understand your Smok example...I've not tanking him on war, but I have on Sam (both as /nin and /war), and he didn't seem like anything special...Maybe my situation is different since I have a mule with both war and nin and every red WS learned, as well as TH6.
Ya, generally we have something like sam(fudo), war, rdm, brd, cor when we farm pop sets...and really, that's the bulk of the time I spend inside Abyssea, which is why I think mnk is overrated. I'm sure you, like I, are done with virtually any seals you care about, and have been for a month or more. I still have some seals I could use, but they are for jobs I don't particularly care about, don't ever play, and ya...MNK is most popular for a reason : it's safest, fastest, and simplest for most things. The exception is key items, but during an extended key item farm you'll probably want more than two people anyway(not to say it can't be done with 2).
Anyway, don't get me wrong, I think a non-Fudo Sam is in a pretty shitty spot at the moment, and honestly if Sam could somehow get Vorpal Blade and Dual Wield with 1 subjob, A Ridill Sam would probably outparse a GK Sam in Abyssea (sadly [k, maybe it's not too sad], it's only one or the other). But that being said, I'd still take a Sam over a Mnk to a lot of what I do, because I think mnk is just not the right tool for the job. Yea, I'd take a warrior over a Sam, or a nin over a Sam too, but again, I'm really not trying to defend a Sam (non-Fudo).
Anyway, mnk is good, it's just not all its cracked up to be at times...
ill give you 1mil for that now or u can wait for the next update and watch that thing crash to 20kI laughed.im not an idiot
just boosted the offer to 1.5m

d/c'd of course
This is hilarious, still don't believe I snagged it second roll... He's chilling in jail w/ the GMs at the moment... We'll see!
Oh god. It's the gift that keeps fucking giving. Hey Frotaut, if I fail, then what are you?

Although, I guess that GK is worth about that much anyway.
Edit: Not my SS, shamelessly ripped from Tsoi's post on ffxiah. Apparently the image was taken down by tsoi then reposted by frotaut to get tsoi in trouble for using third pt tools (i.e. windower). Also, again, not a stab at Exo. Just this guy.
Is that even worth 50k anymore? You could 4-hit it without sacrificing Haste, I guess, but the base damage is so low now...
