Apologize for the necro, but I'd like to bump own topic as I recently was able to convince him to build his own PC. I looked at some of the suggestions from here and decided to try to build one and learn the process myself and this is what I was able to come up with. Obviously the biggest thing is whether or not any of this is compatible but other than that if any kind of swaps can be made for equal or better performance for less money. I've got two builds here as one is part of a combo pack ASUS is offering and one is not.

    1st Combo Build:

    2nd Build:

Thanks in advance, and again I appreciate all advice.

    *EDIT
There we go; should have just went with BG bucket from the get go.

Gonna reply to this thread, rather than start a new one.

Building a PC for 14 basically, but for other games too... Fallout, Diablo 3, whatever.

Here is what I've picked out so far, but I'm not very knowledgeable on a lot of this stuff, so I would appreciate anyone's opinion on what I've selected. Also, if anyone could recommend cooling options/products, that would be great too.

I despise the heat, so my computer is always in a room between 65-70 F. if that makes a difference.

i'd pay the $10 more and get the i7-950 cpu, and you need RAM unless you already have some... they have some nice corsair 1600 3x2GB combos with corsair power supplies on there (just realized you weren't using newegg, when i typed "there" i meant newegg.com), might be able to save a bit of money instead of getting the psu you have listed

edit: oh and a motherboard as well, unless you already have that too. some other people will be able to recommend mobos better than i can, i ended up going with the EVGA $269 one on newegg, there are tons

Cool, thanks for the newegg recommendation. I was using TigerDirect for everything else before. Going to browse newegg and try to include everything I need, and then be sad @ the price. Not even sure what kind of motherboard I'll need. Are they much different? I assume it has to be "good enough" to support the processor and gpu?

Edit: Yikes, okay this is my list from newegg. Do I gotta pay that much for a motherboard? I wasn't really looking at them, because I can't tell the difference really between one or the other. I just added one that "other people have bought" who also bought the i7 950 processor. Also, I will need some kind of cooling unit outside of what the gpu will have, right? Any suggestions?

    I appreciate the help

I like the first build better minus the mobo, you can save a few bucks more if you go w/ 965BE and even more if you choose 955BE. You can invest on a better mobo w/ SATA 6.0/USB 3.0 (might as well). Also, if you go for the second build why not get a SATA 6.0 HD? G.skills are the same I have and they work flawlessly. Hella easy to OC to 1600. I'd go w/ a Corsair PSU, 700W should be fine, maybe even 650 depending if you want to xfire it later on. Here's my build so you can check.
