This question was brought up in the previous thread but wasn't really answered, so I'll ask it.

Is there any sort of list of which mobs are capable of dropping Amber Lights in Abyssea? So far all I can find is that Tonberry's drop it in Kon. The wiki doesn't list specific lights on mobs.

    Thoughts?
We just talked about RNG merits on Page 99 of the older random question thread, go check it out.

For THF, you can split the other group 1 merits among Sneak/Trick Attack however you choose, and for group 2 I like at least one of Aura Steal and Assassin's Charge - and really whatever else you want after that. Do you do a lot of THF melee on mobs or are you solo most of the time? Do you just go in for WS and stay out of the way the rest of the time? Do you want to be able to yank buffs off the mob more often or is just the dispel enough? These sorts of questions should help you figure out what you like for the group 2 stuff.

THF is not a damage dealer. Don't merit Assassin's Charge because it's not helping anyways (or even as much as you think it will). Capped Aura Steal is fantastic utility, which is pretty much what you're doing as a THF. That isn't to say don't merit something like Triple Attack, because that's an obvious improvement with no sacrifice, but a combination other than Aura Steal and Feint isn't really doing anything for you nor others.

Alternatively, if you are a Mandau Thief and not a Thief (doubtful if you're asking this - but hey), you may first slash your wrists for upgrading your relic and the impending trials you will face and then proceed to ignore this post.

I don't understand why people like Aura Steal so much. 1/5 definitely so you can have a dispel every 5 minutes, but you really feel gaining these buffs you dispel is that much better than Assassin's Charge? Past that, I don't understand the fuss over feint either. It was okay to go to 4/5 at some merit camps before (let you feint every Lurker), but how often are you in a situation where you are not accuracy capped and would use feint every 2 minutes? If you're grouped with good DDs, they should be accuracy capped via food or gear. You'd really need to be using sushi, full accuracy gear, and STILL not be accuracy capped to make 5/5 feint worthwhile at all. Unless there is some other time besides a Mamool merit camp where you fight a high accuracy mob every X minutes, I don't see the big fuss on feint. 1 point is great, up to 3-4 is nice because it is reasonable you'll fight thieves every now and then, but 5/5?

Maybe I'm wrong here, but I just don't see it (I went 1 Aura, 4 Feint, 5 Assassins). All that being said, I don't think lowering Assassin's Charge that far is amazing or anything, it's a very minor damage increase at best, but I just don't see the other options being significantly better - they're all quite lackluster. And, a thief can easily do solid damage if played correctly. Yea, it's not going to beat an equally skilled/geared other DD, but it's not terrible to the point you shouldn't be meleeing or something.

Or...you could...oh, i don't know...take all of your acc gear off, and use shit like varangian on multi hit ws, etc.

Pretty small increase in damage still...and that's assuming all your DDs have swaps like that to make and do so (and never make a mistake and hit said macro as feint is wearing). Don't get me wrong, it has some potential, but it's not super amazing, and making use of a 2min cooldown on feint is almost never worthwhile afaik.
Also, I don't really use much "accuracy gear" in any of my multi-hits. Generally get most of it on already-solid pieces (Haub+1, Love Torque, Byakko's/Usukane legs, etc) and that + random dex on gear/etc really should probably be enough (Assuming you're using a proper TP set).

I probably have a bit of a bias. I used my thief for things like Big Bomb and Guivre etc. before cap increase (free TH4, not because it was necessary to have an evasion tank, before people wah at me) and being able to take Big Bomb's Berserk, Evasion boost from Guivre, etc. along with with a large deal of alternative niche things in party/alliance situations seemed far more desirable than an abysmal increase in damage once every seven and a half minutes (ten if you are full meriting Feint).

If you're insistent that Assassin's Charge is actually doing something for your parse (it isn't, trust me), then go ahead and full merit it. One is all you really need in Aura Steal, but I personally see it as far more useful (and definitely more fun ).

Assassin's Charge is plenty fun with True Strike and a Raphael's Rod. I don't know about you, but I use THF most often in Dynamis, where having Feint up frequently is nice to tag all the THF/NIN type mobs (although that's becoming less and less necessary these days). And for solo, Aura Steal is great. I don't even have my group 2 merits finished yet but I'm still on the fence myself.

5minutes with my setup. And I do realize exactly how low of an increase it is, and I will admit for the situations you mentioned Aura Steal is significantly better...but I really think after you do 1/1/1, the rest are all pretty small/situational. I like 4 feint, due to the 5min repop on job specific mobs in various locations, but the 5th point seems completely unnecessary (and I'd generally rather save feint for when I know accuracy is needed than waste a JA cooldown and risk not having it up when needed while using it on cooldown, when good DDs are generally accuracy capped). I dunno, I don't think Charge is great, but it's not near as bad as you're making it out to be imo.

Combat skill damage tiers.... do they exist for any skills in addition to H2H? I know H2H tiers work because of the "+ dmg" form of weapon upgrading. However, I was not sure if that was the reason only H2H can have these damage tiers or if other combat types had another way of reaching their own tiers.

No other weapon skill has damage tiers.
